New Apple CEO John Ternus is the subject of a new TIME interview in which he discussed the iPhone Duo and the foldable phones that came before it. This comes as TIME published its list of the best inventions of the year.
Discussing the iPhone Duo, Ternus pointed out that Apple first began talking about the idea of a foldable iPhone back in 2011.

It was just a case of waiting for the technology to become available.
In 2011, when many people still carried around flip phones, Ternus and five other engineers filed a patent application for foldable electronic devices, exploring what kind of batteries and circuit boards might be needed for such an idea. “It felt clear that we were going to eventually get to a place where OLED displays were going to be flexible,” Ternus says.
While Samsung and others have been making foldable phones for some time now, Ternus hasn’t been impressed with what they have produced. He said that “The other examples in the world felt kind of cheap and crappy,” heaping pressure on the iPhone Duo to stand out from the crowd when it goes on sale on October 23.
The iPhone Duo certainly won’t be cheap. At a $1,999 starting point, it’s the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever made. Preorders begin tomorrow, October 16.
