Metallica Guitarist Kirk Hammett Loses iPhone With 250 Riffs For Next Album

It’s always hurtful to lose an iPhone; they’re expensive, and they carry a lot of our personal data. Well, for Kirk Hammett, Metallica’s lead guitarist, his recent loss of an iPhone transcends all such notions. Why? Because his lost iPhone contained over 250 guitar riffs which he had created for the band’s next album.

Back in 2012, Kirk revealed that he had come up with 400 riffs for Metallica’s next album, and had narrowed them down to around 250, the guitarist had them stored in his iPhone – which has now gone missing. According to Hammett, who revealed the details of this unfortunate event that took place six months back: “I put riffs on my iPhone, but something very unfortunate happened to me about six months ago. I lost my iPhone [containing] 250 musical ideas. And I was crushed. It didn’t get backed up.”

Hammet further added that he obviously didn’t remember all 250 of those riffs, and has decided that he has no other option but to move ahead with what he has and build on it once again. “I can only remember, like, eight of [the ideas]. So I just chalked it down to maybe it just wasn’t meant to be and I’ll just move forward with it,” said Hammett.

Not that many of us have data stored on our iPhone that can cost us millions of bucks, but events like these are hard pressing reminders of why we should keep important stuff on our phones backed up at all times. In Hammett’s case, we can only hope that the phone was remotely wiped, but it’s interesting that the guitarist has chosen the word “missing” to describe the loss of his phone, which does leave us confused if the device was lost or just went off for a walk in the park by itself.

Metallica’s perils with Apple are not entirely new. In 2008 when the band released its album ‘Death Magnetic,’ the tracks were put through a mastering process, specifically carried out for iPod users. This resulted in distorted sounds for a number of tracks in the album, and it was the mastering process that was blamed.

If you’re an iPhone user, always keep your things backed up, either using iCloud or the old fashioned way using iTunes.
