Ferrari announced a partnership with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom design firm five years ago, and the first fruits of that partnership can now be seen in the Ferrari Luce, an EV supercar.
The design of the interface, PRNDL’s Jordan Goldson reports, was done with the aim of ensuring that people would be able to interact with it without distraction. But in a video showing off the new car, the design could be described as being straight out of Apple’s playbook.

At first glance, it’s hard to ignore the two iPad-like shapes, one powering the gauge cluster, the other some in-car controls. Black displays with silver trim aren’t exclusive to Apple, but it’s impossible not to see its tablets in the design.
However, as much as they might look like iPads, Ive, LoveFrom’s former Apple design chief, says that he never considered making the car’s interface touch-first.
“The reason we developed touch — the big idea was to develop a general-purpose interface that could be a calculator, that could be a typewriter, could be a camera, rather than having physical buttons,” Ive reportedly told Golson. “To use touch in a car is something I would never dream of doing, because it requires that you look at what you’re doing.”
Considering the iPhone and iPad arguably ushered in an era of touch-first car interfaces, it’s notable that Ive is the one railing against it. Instead, he says, touch is “just the wrong technology to be the primary interface.”
