The infamous iPhone Dev-Team has finally released a new version 3.1.3 of PwnageTool which can jailbreak iPhone OS firmware 3.1 running on the original iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (first-gen) and iPod touch 2G. Follow the step-by-step instructions below in order to jailbreak iPod touch 2G (second generation) running on firmware 3.1:
NOTE: This version of PwnageTool does not support iPod touch 3G.
For OS X Leopard/Snow Leopard users
Mac users can follow the instructions posted here with following changes for iPod touch 2G:
- In Step 3, you will have to grab the original iPod touch firmware 3.1 from Apple for free (if you bought 3.0) or just go ahead buy the new firmware which costs about $9.
- In Step 4, select iPod touch 2G when it asks for your device.
- Skip Step 6.
rest of the steps should now be simple and straight forward.
For Windows XP/Vista/7 users
Dev-Team has not released any tool like redsn0w yet which can jailbreak iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1 on Windows. So as a Windows user, you will have to either ask a friend with Mac to cook firmware 3.1 for your iPod touch or download the already cooked firmware 3.1 available on the Internet. Once you have got the custom cooked firmware 3.1 file, simply follow the instructions posted here from Step 5 onwards in order to successfully jailbreak your iPod touch 2G with firmware 3.1 on Windows.
