iOS 27 Update Brings AI Reframing And More To iPhone Photos

Apple has announced iOS 27, including a new feature that will make it possible to reframe a photo even after it has been taken. Furthermore, the photo doesn’t even need to have been taken using an iPhone.

Spatial Reframing allows users to reposition the camera angle by dragging and pinching the image. A blur will be applied to the edge of the image during editing, with Apple Intelligence then replacing the blur once editing is complete.

Apple noted that the generative AI will only use the original image as the source, ensuring that any content it creates will be accurate.

Apple also announced an updated Cleanup tool, adding the ability to remove components “even when the scene is complex.” An Extend tool is also being added that will allow users to expand the background of a photo or adjust its aspect ratio after the fact.

Apple pointed out that the new photography features use its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. That means that while some image processing is done in the cloud, the data remains protected within Apple’s systems.

The new iOS 27 software update is already available in beta form for developers. However, it won’t be released to the public until this fall. A public beta program will begin in July for those who can’t wait, too.
