iOS 26 Dynamically Adjusts Storage Space For Future System Updates

Apple’s iOS 26 will add a new feature that will make it easier to install new versions of the iPhone’s system software when it launches this fall.

The new software was announced at WWDC on June 9 and includes a number of new features that include Liquid Glass, a new interface design language for the whole Apple ecosystem of devices.

But one new addition, confirmed via the iOS 26 beta 1 release notes, will help people whose iPhones never seem to have enough space.

Installing a new iOS software update requires a lot of space, something that can be an issue. Now, iOS 26 will be able to dynamically reserve space to ensure that new software updates can complete successfully.

“Depending on the amount of free space available, iOS might dynamically reserve update space for Automatic Updates to download and install successfully,” the release notes say.

The feature will ensure that iPhone owners who have automatic updates enabled will not find that an update has failed because they don’t have enough free space. The move means that automatic updates will truly be automatic, allowing people to never have to think about it again.

The iOS 26 software update is in developer beta right now, and a public beta is expected in July. Apple says the final release will come this fall, likely in or around the middle of September alongside the unveiling of the new iPhones.
