iOS 26 CarPlay Finally Adds Multi-Touch Support

Apple announced iOS 26 at the WWDC opening keynote on June 9, and while it highlighted a ton of new features, there were some smaller features that didn’t get stage time. Apple has now shared details on one of those, related to CarPlay, as well as a tweak to iOS 18.4 and later.

The new iOS 26 CarPlay feature will allow users to use multi-touch gestures in supported vehicles when using mapping apps, like Apple Maps and Google Maps.

The change will allow pinching for zooming and more, something that is currently not available.

“Many new vehicles support multitouch interactions, including any vehicle that supports CarPlay Ultra,” said Olivia Hess, a CarPlay software engineer at Apple, in the video session reported by MacRumors. “Starting in iOS 26, if a vehicle supports multitouch interactions in CarPlay, drivers can interact with your navigation app using multitouch gestures.”

The same video also confirmed that iOS 18.4 and later now support a new sports mode for audio apps.

This change means that apps that stream live sports audio can now show a scoreboard on the display alongside the media, allowing people to see scores at a glance.

While the scoreboard feature is available on iOS 18.4 or later, the new iOS 26 features won’t ship until this fall — likely around the time that Apple will announce the new iPhone 17 devices.
