Apple announced the new iOS 26 software update during the WWDC 2025 opening keynote on June 5, and while it showed off some features, we’re still learning some of the smaller ones.
One addition that didn’t get stage time was a new EnergyKit framework in iOS 26 that will bring energy features to Apple Home and HomeKit.
Shared via a new video posted to the Apple developer website, the video outlines what developers will be able to do when integrating energy data when iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 ship later this year.
While the Home app can already display things like energy usage, this new support for EnergyKit will allow developers to use data the Home app collects to create actions for devices that will then alter their behavior.
The obvious feature here would be to allow an EV charger to turn on once electricity is cheaper, or a home’s battery is full, for example.
Apple’s iOS 26 software is now available in beta to developers, but it won’t be released to the public until this fall — likely in September alongside the new iPhone 17 lineup.
