Google Planning Vastly Improved Nexus 7 For I/O With Full HD Display, 5MP Camera And More [Report]

Of all the tech products to release last year, Google’s Nexus 7 was one of the most eagerly anticipated and well received. Nobody could believe how much solid hardware Google had managed to pack into such a reasonably priced tablet, and one analyst is under the impression that the Big G is about to make consumers another offer they’d be hard pushed to refuse. According to resident Apple whistleblower Ming chi Kuo of KGI securities, the search giant will be adding a 5-megapixel rear camera to the Nexus 7, which will also include such features as an improved 1,920 × 1,200 display, a Qualcomm APQ 8064 processor and wireless charging. Kuo also notes that the price will stay at the very agreeable price of $199, and the design will also be notably thinner and lighter than the current generation Nexus 7.

As an owner of the device myself, I have to say I’ve been very pleased with it, but one of my main gripes has been the lack of a rear-facing camera. With most tablets and all smartphones now packing a relatively decent shooter, the Nexus 7’s rather mediocre front-facing camera doesn’t really cut it for using apps such as Instagram, or any other photo editing / sharing app for that matter.

Still, more than just the camera, the display enhancement will put the Nexus 7 up there in the big leagues in terms of sharpness, and the implementation of that new Qualcomm processor will certainly help keep tings ticking over smoothly.

The original model of the ASUS-manufactured slate was the first to ship with Android Jelly Bean, and with all the talk of version 4.3 being announced at the Google I/O 2013 developers event, perhaps Google has similar plans once again.

Kuo reckons the device could ship from June or July, and also believes Google will ramp up production in anticipation of strong early sales. He foresees the revamped Nexus 7 shifting in excess of five million units in the remaining six months of the year, and with Google once again likely to take a hit and sell the slab at a loss in order to get more fingers and thumbs using Android, consumers will certainly not find a better value for money tablet across the entire market.
