Microsoft has taken the wraps off its new Windows 10 operating system, which is not only heavily focused on business and enterprise, but also seeks to draw a level of parity between its current pool of ecosystems. Following the announcement, the software maker promised that a Technical Preview of Windows 10 would be available to download from October 1st, and now, those looking to test out this unfinished OS can do so.

As we learned at the keynote, the future of Windows is something of a tug-of-war between tradition and innovation. Many elements that lingered pre-Windows 8 have once again returned, including, most notably, the Start menu. But by the same token, it also includes support for tiles, which can be resized at will, as well as a vastly-improved search function, showing that the software maker can, in fact, cater to different types of hardware.

The Technical Preview, it was presumed prior to the event, would be for developers only, but as we’ve seen from Apple, which recently introduced the OS X Beta Seed Program for members of the wider community, “beta” and “preview” aren’t words that even your average user is intimidated by nowadays, and as such, the Windows Insider Program seeks to involve a large chunk of those interested in the future of Windows.

To download the Technical Preview, you’ll need to point your browser over to insider.windows.com and follow the on-screen instructions. After a short while, your machine will be running the Preview edition of Windows 10, and you’ll be able to dive straight into some of the new features.

Given that it is still a Preview, mind, you’re still likely to encounter some bugs and imperfections. Updates are likely to be frequent over the next few months as Microsoft refines Windows 10 in the run-up to the next annual BUILD dev conference, so any major problems should be dealt with in a timely manner, but do remember that this is not an end user roll-out, so don’t go expecting complete seamlessness.
