The progressive discontinuation of the extremely popular Popcorn Time movie streaming service has left a lot of users looking for something that offers similar functionality. We recently discussed the fact that MovieBox was available to download and install onto Apple’s iOS 9 compatible devices without the need for a jailbreak; that’s one potential alternative. However, there’s also a similar app, called PlayBox HD, which is available via the same mechanisms, and offers a very similar experience with a different interface and user experience.
PlayBox HD has been around for a while, was developed and made available by developer Tri Nguyen, version 2.0 of the app is available to download and install on iPhones and iPads that are running iOS 9.0, 9.0.1, 9.0.2, or 9.1. The increasingly popular app, which is essentially a morally devoid way of accessing popular movies, cartoon series and TV shows, competes in terms of functionality with the likes of MovieBox, but also comes with a number of differences that may end up appealing to a very different subset of users looking for this type of functionality on a non-jailbroken iPhone or iPad.
PlayBox HD, like the MovieBox, is available via the vShare market and can be easily downloaded to an iPhone or iPad via the same method. For those that may be new to software such as vShare, or apps like PlayBox HD, it’s not quite as seamless as simply hitting the App Store, performing a search, and getting the app downloaded in an instant.
PlayBox HD, once again, like MovieBox, is on Apple’s radar due to the fact that it not only contravenes the company guidelines, but also because it’s morally questionable and utilizes Enterprise Certificates to make the installation possible by bypassing Apple’s internal iOS device security that is designed to prevent installations of this nature. Still, if you manage to navigate and find your way on to the vShare, then it’s a relatively simple process to locate PlayBox HD and install it, without requiring any jailbreak.
If you happen to encounter any issues with launching the app in iOS 9, and in particular being told by iOS that it’s from an “Untrusted Enterprise Developer”, then check out the bottom of our MovieBox post for how to bypass that pitfall: Download MovieBox 3.3.7 For iOS 9 / 9.1 Without Jailbreak.
