Check watchOS 27, tvOS 27 Compatible Devices Here

Apple’s WWDC 2026 opening keynote came and went with little mention of the Apple TV streaming box or its tvOS software, but it’s now been confirmed that the update will not be available on two specific devices.

Following the release of the tvOS 27 beta 1 update to developers, it’s been discovered that the software update cannot be installed on the Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K (1st gen) models.

That means that owners of those two models will need to buy a more modern Apple TV if they want to use the tvOS 27 update. Thankfully, there aren’t any big new changes to the tvOS 27 update that are likely to make the upgrade a necessity.

However, Apple is expected to announce new Apple TV hardware sooner rather than later. A release this fall seems the most likely, although Apple has yet to confirm anything to that effect. It’s also unclear what the updated hardware will be capable of, although it seems likely that it will support Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

With that in mind, it’s also possible that the new hardware will be required in order to use those features, leaving older Apple TVs out in the cold. The result is that the new Apple TV could actually be a more worthwhile upgrade than might otherwise have been expected.

As for the Apple Watch, the new watchOS 27 update has dropped support for the original Apple Watch Ultra, as well as the Apple Watch SE2. Any model older than the Apple Watch Series 9 is also left out.
