Atari’s Greatest Hits For iOS Is Free For Today; Includes 100 Arcade And Classic Atari 2600 Games

Have you ever felt that today’s games are far too complex? That they require far too many buttons and have overly realistic graphics? Do you remember the good ol’ days of the 1970s and early 80s when controllers had, at max, 4-6 buttons and “graphics” meant environments and moving characters whose pixels you could count with your hands?

If the answer to all that is yes, then you’ll be glad to know that Atari’s Greatest Hits for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad is available for free again for a limited period of time. Check it out after the jump.

Atari iOS

To celebrate Labor Day, over 100 games are up for free under Atari’s Greatest Hits. This includes games like Asteroids, Super Breakout, Battlezone 4, Pong, Centipede etc. etc. When this app isn’t free tomorrow, buying all these games would cost $9.99, so it’s a pretty nice saving.

Of course, these games are pretty primitive. After all, they were developed and released in the 1970s for a console that came with a 1.2MHz processor and 128 bytes of RAM. Gameplay is straightforward and graphics very limited.

What makes these games interesting though is that you can play them with your friends. Yes, multiplayer gaming over Bluetooth is possible in games like Warlords and Pong. In addition, all games come with their own cabinets and original box art to heighten your sense of nostalgia. If that’s not enough, you can buy an Atari Arcade Duo Powered arcade controller separately to game like it’s 1977.

One very annoying bit about the app is that you have to download all games one by one. You have to swipe through game cabinets, press play and then wait for it to download. I know they did this to give users an gaming arcade style experience, but it’s just such a chore to get started with this app.

Atari’s Greatest Hits is a universal app that works on all iOS devices on iOS 4.3 or later. It can be downloaded for free today from the link embedded below:
