Apple’s iPhone Fold Could Use A Tougher Display Than Foldables From Samsung And Others

Apple’s hotly anticipated foldable phone could use a different kind of display in an attempt to make it more scratch-resistant than those sold by Samsung and others.

According to The Elec, Apple is considering using a transparent polyimide film (CPI) to protect the foldable glass that forms the iPhone Fold’s inner display.

The alternative, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) coating, is preferred by Samsung and is used on its current Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices. But Apple looks set to do things differently.

Citing an unnamed source, The Elec says that Apple is still undecided on which type of display film to use, but that it is most likely to choose CPI because it is less likely to scratch or be damaged. It’s thought that Apple wants to ensure that its first foldable iPhone will stand out from the crowd thanks to its display.

That would match previous reports that Apple will use a new, crease-free foldable display technology. While the crease on competing models has become smaller and smaller in recent years, it’s still visible in the wrong lighting conditions. It’s thought that Apple’s display will be crease-free, no matter how it’s held.

That, coupled with the scratch-free technology, could make the foldable iPhone the premium option to beat for Samsung and other phone makers.
