Following OpenAI’s announcement of ChatGPT’s upgrade to GPT-5, iPhone owners are probably wondering when the new version will be made available to iPhone and Apple Intelligence owners.
Now, we know, it’ll be available when iOS 26 ships next month.

The news was shared by 9to5Mac, with Apple apparently being the source of the news. Apple Intelligence currently uses OpenAI’s GPT-40 model, but that will be upgraded to GPT-5 when iOS 26 is released to the public in September. The same goes for iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26, too.
Following today’s reveal of OpenAI’s latest model, Apple tells me that ChatGPT integration within Apple Intelligence will use GPT-5 with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.
Users of Apple Intelligence can choose to not allow it to contact OpenAI for help when it’s needed, but those who do will see GPT-5 used from iOS 26 onwards. The feature is free, although users can sign into their OpenAI accounts and take advantage of any upgraded subscription they might have.
The iOS 26 software is currently in testing with both public and developer beta programs running. The latest beta did not show GPT-5 the last time we checked, so we might have to wait for the next beta version to be released before that becomes available.
Owners of Macs, iPads, Apple Watches, Apple TVs, and Apple Vision Pro headsets can look forward to new software updates for their respective devices next month, too.
