Apple will allow third-party chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT to work with its CarPlay functionality, according to a new report by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
Apple currently allows CarPlay users to access Siri while driving, but Gurman says that support for chatbots from other companies will be available sooner rather than later.

Gurman believes that Apple “is working to support the apps in CarPlay within the coming months,” citing unnamed people” familiar with the matter.
That means a driver could, say, ask ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations without taking their hands off the wheel. Apple customers have been clamoring for such an option for months, but there’s no guarantee that outside developers will follow through and take advantage of the capability.
However, those hoping that ChatGPT could replace Siri will be left disappointed. The Siri button will continue to launch Siri itself, as will any wake word that iPhone owners use. Gurman says that the chatbots will have to be summoned via a CarPlay app specifically.
The good news is that developers will be able to make their chatbot’s voice mode automatically begin whenever the app is opened. That will at least remove some additional taps and make third-party chatbots safer to use.
Apple is yet to confirm the news, but the company is expected to announce its iOS 27 software in June. Before then, a big Siri upgrade is expected for iPhones when the new iOS 26.4 update arrives within the next few weeks.
