What you need to know before updating to iPhone OS 3.0

Its only been few hours since Apple publicly released the iPhone OS 3.0 for iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch and I have already started receiving lots of emails  from people asking about various questions related to updating to iPhone OS 3.0. Instead of replying to them individually, I thought it would be useful to make a short post in order to answer most frequently asked questions:

How do I update to iPhone OS 3.0?

Well, simply connect your iPhone to your computer, start iTunes and then click on “Check for update”. It will prompt you to download and install the latest iPhone OS 3.0 update for your device.

Can I update to iPhone OS 3.0 for free?

All existing iPhone and iPhone 3G owners will get the update for free. iPod Touch users however will have to pay $9.95 to get the update.

I have successfully updated my iPhone to OS 3.0 and now I cant find any option for Video Recording, Voice Control app, Compass and more?

Video Recording, Voice Control app and the Compass app is exclusive to the new iPhone 3G S only. Maybe someone will find alternatives or simply a way to make them work on previous-gen models.

What is Jailbreaking? and how can I Jailbreak my iPhone with OS 3.0?

Jailbreaking enables you to install and run applications from third parties outside the App Store. Dev-Team will soon be releasing “QuickPwn” tool which will enable you to run jail broken apps on your iPhone and iPhone 3G.

Will all my third-party apps still work after updating to iPhone OS 3.0?

No. If you apply this update and you have third-party (non App Store) applications that you rely on they will stop working.

Can I unlock my iPhone with iPhone OS 3.0?

Yes, you would be able to unlock your iPhone with ultrasn0w tool from Dev-Team which will enable you to use any carrier SIM on your iPhone.

I have updated my jailbroken iPhone 3G with 2.2.1 to 3.0 and now all of my jailbroken apps are gone. Is there any way I can get them back?

The only way to get them back is to restore to the old firmware from backup or wait for the release of the new QuickPwn from the Dev-Team.

Feel free to ask me any other question that you may have regarding the iPhone OS 3.0 update process.
