So you have an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS (New Bootrom), running iOS 4.0.1, with SHSH blobs saved on Cydia, and you want to restore your iPhone again to iOS 4.0.1. Now that Apple has stopped signing iOS 4.0.1, you wont be able to restore your iPhone 4 on iOS 4.0.1 by simply pointing iTunes to iOS 4.0.1 ipsw file. Because if you do so, iTunes will throw an error: “This iPhone [your name] iPhone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

Yesterday, Apple released the iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod touch 3G / 2G and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad to fix the PDF exploit which was used by JailbreakMe.com. Since the nature of exploit was highly vulnerable, Apple recommended everyone to update to this new firmware in order to secure all iOS based devices. This of course also meant that jailbreak and unlock for iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad and iPod touch 3G on iOS 4.0.2 / 3.2.2 will not be possible for these mentioned devices.

There is now an unofficial version of PwnageTool out in the wild which can jailbreak iPhone 3GS (with old bootrom and already pwned on 3.1.2) on the latest iOS 4.0.1 firmware. The creators of the original PwnageTool has confirmed that this version has been modified and redistributed without their permission, and most importantly, it doesn’t patches some important files which are required for the ultrasn0w unlock to work properly.

iOS 4.0.1 has been released for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. While the iPhone 4 and 3GS users will have to wait for a new jailbreak tool, iPhone 3G can go ahead and jailbreak their phone on iOS 4.0.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 3G only. All other iOS based devices will be jailbreakable once Comex releases his new jailbreak tool.

Apple today has released iOS 4.0.1 to fix the much talked about iPhone 4 reception issue which has been plaguing users since its launch last month. Apart from this fix, nothing much has been added and so if you are an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G user, and you rely on a jailbreak and unlock, it is better to avoid this upgrade until new jailbreak and unlock tools are available. Comex – the guy behind Spirit jailbreak tool for iPad and iPhone / iPod touch is expected to release an update to Spirit, which will jailbreak iOS based devices on the latest firmware.

According to a recent tweet by a twitter user @MaxdMerc, a guy working at the Apple Store, Lakeside (UK) has reportedly confirmed that the next firmware update might be delayed slightly due to Apple working on a fix to patch the hole, recently used to jailbreak iOS 4. This however shouldn’t be surprising as almost all firmware updates in past have been used to block the exploits used to jailbreak the previous firmware versions.
