Google Maps Is Getting Gemini AI And 3D Immersive Navigation

Google today announced that it is upgrading the popular Maps app and service by adding Gemini AI-powered features and “fundamentally changing what a map can do.”

In a blog post detailing the new features, Google unveiled Ask Maps, a conversational feature that will allow users to ask Gemini questions about their location.

With the upgraded Google Maps, users will be able to ask things like, “My phone is dying — where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?”

The feature can also be used when planning a trip, with Google offering an example of someone planning a trip to the Grand Canyon.

So if you’re planning a trip, just ask: “I’m headed to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Coral Dunes — any recommended stops along the way?” You’ll get clear directions, ETAs, and insider tips from real people, like how to find a hidden hiking trail or get a free entry ticket. To build your itinerary, Maps analyzes information from over 300 million places, including reviews from our community of more than 500 million contributors

Google also announced Immersive Navigation, a feature that changes the way Maps behaves when you’re driving. A new 3D map view shows buildings, terrain, and more, and will even “highlight critical road details like lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights.”

Alongside the visual upgrade, Google says users will also get a broader view of their route so they can prepare for lane changes and turns. More information will also be made available when Google Maps offers an alternate route, allowing drivers to make a more informed decision about which route to take.

The Ask Maps feature is rolling out in the United States and India on iOS and Android right now. The new Immersive Navigation feature is also available in the United States starting today, but as part of a phased rollout. That means you may not see it just yet.
