Google Working On Bringing Gboard For iPhone Keyboard Features To Android

After announcing and releasing Gboard for iOS, Google was predictably and immediately questioned as to whether users of Android devices could expect to see the keyboard, or at least its features make the jump from iOS to Android any time soon. As it turns out, the answer is yes.

Following the release of Gboard for iPhone, the team behind the keyboard set up camp on product curation site Product Hunt with the inevitable question of Android support raised by one curious user. When posed the question, product manager Bri Connelly gave the answer that everyone was waiting for – yes, Google is indeed already working on bringing Gboard’s features to Android, although Connelly didn’t clarify whether that meant a new keyboard was on its way to Android, or Android’s stock keyboard was about to get Gboard’s biggest features.

Of those features, the ability to quickly search the internet and then have the results immediately available for pasting into a chat conversation or any other document is possibly the most interesting. Easy emoji and GIF searching will also likely be popular amongst Gboard users, although such things are already starting to become baked into apps such as Facebook Messenger, meaning additional sources of funny clips or smiley faces isn’t exactly required at the moment.

“Working on the best way to bring the same functionality to Android right now!” – Gboard product manager Bri Connelly.

Product-Hunt-comment

If Google does bring Gboard for iPhone features to the standard Google Keyboard that resides on Android, it will come after a big update started rolling out to Android devices. Google Keyboard’s recent update brought with it a new one-handed mode, amongst other things, making it even better than it already was. I’m not a huge fan of third-party keyboards, especially on Android, and when the stock offering from Google is so good, why go looking elsewhere?
