Rumors of Apple’s intention to launch its first foldable phone as soon as 2026 have been circulating for some time now, and a new report suggests that progress continues to be made towards that goal.
According to a new report by DigiTimes, picked up by MacRumors, Apple began the initial Prototype 1 (P1) testing phase in June.

That’s one of the phases that come before the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) and is expected to be completed by the end of 20205. With that in mind, a launch in the second half of 2026 seems more likely than ever before.
Following the P1 phases, additional P2 and P3 phases are expected as Apple’s suppliers and manufacturing partners run tests to ensure that the foldable iPhone can be manufactured at scale. Any issues will be highlighted and worked on ahead of the expected launch window in a little more than a year’s time.
The same report also claims that Apple has paused its work on a foldable iPad, something that was expected to launch before or around the same time as the foldable iPhone. It’s thought that increased costs and issues with the manufacturing process have led to this decision.

Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone is expected to have a large internal display of around the same size as an iPad mini. A smaller external display will be used for those times when opening the device is not needed or practical.
