After 4 Years, Apple’s Lockdown Mode Has Never Been Breached

Apple says that Lockdown Mode, its upgraded security system, has never been breached. That means that no device that has Lockdown Mode enabled has ever been hacked.

Lockdown Mode was first launched four years ago, and adds additional security features to iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.

Apple launched the feature to help those who would be at a higher risk of being the subject of advanced hacking techniques, like politicians, journalists, and other high-risk groups.

“We are not aware of any successful mercenary spyware attacks against a Lockdown Mode-enabled Apple device,” Apple spokesperson Sarah O’Rourke reportedly told TechCrunch on Friday.

Apple had previously sent notifications to users in more than 150 countries, warning them that they may have been hacked with spyware, highlighting the issue that these users have to deal with.

While Lockdown Mode can be enabled by anyone, it should only be used by people who may be at risk. Once enabled, it disables a number of features that most users would normally use. But for those who need it, the loss of these features is a worthwhile trade-off for the additional privacy and security that Lockdown Mode has to offer.

Lockdown Mode is available in iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, watchOS 10 or later, and macOS Ventura or later. Additional protections were also added to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS Sonoma.
