Keep in mind that this is an EXTREMELY early version of WM7 and it's common for a new alpha/beta OS to have bugs that make it incompatible with previous apps. I would be really surprised if the apps written for .NET CF would be incompatible unless the developer also used low level code to access hardware.
All that said.. I still think it would be OK if MSFT dropped compatibility. There are only a few good apps existing now anyhow.
@John Hastings: I would think that most phones designed to run WM6.6 (with capacitive touch screens) would also work with WM7. The carriers /developers will probably offer upgrades to WM7. If they don't, the guys at xda-dev will probably offer it...

It doesn't surprise me that a complete me that a rewrite has taken place. When you look under the skin of Windows Mobile it is very outdated and very hard to produce apps with UIs. Also there are so few apps in the app store and as so many of them are so crap I think Microsoft wouldn't be to bothered about losing app compatibility.

Has Microsoft just killed sales in Windows Mobile 6.x?

The story so far is that Microsoft will release one more minor facelift update (WinMo 6.6) before the totally new platform (WinMo 7) comes out.

I can't imagine Windows Mobile 6.6 will sell very well, considering the whole platform will be boned, to make way for the new WM7.

Good, Windows Mobile 7 doesn't need to be held back by supporting legacy Apps, it'll be a better product because of it.
