Uber In iOS 10: Hail A Cab By Saying Something Like “Hey Siri Get Me An Uber”

With iOS 10 now available for anyone with a compatible device, app developers are pushing updates versions of their apps out to the App Store, with those apps taking advantage of any new APIs and features that iOS 10 brings to the table. Two of those are the ability for apps to tie directly into Siri and Maps. Both of those features are at the heart of a new update to the Uber app, and they make for a pretty cool update indeed.

Available to download now as part of a free update for the Uber iPhone app, the new features are front and center in the app’s changelog as well they should be.

Those who like to make full use of Siri will be particularly pleased to hear that ordering a new Uber is now easier than ever. According to Uber, simply asking Siri to “order me an Uber” or “Get me a cab” or “Get me an Uber” or “Get me an Uber for airport” and the likes should see the digital assistant go away and order a new Uber with no need to open any apps or tap anything on-screen at all. Only now, after all these years, is Siri likely to begin to fulfil some of the cool features that we are seemingly promised year on year. With app integration, Siri’s game just got upgraded.

The second is the ability for users to order a new Uber right from within the Apple Maps app. Instead of having to open the Uber app to order a car, users can now do it straight from the Maps app, via the new Ride tab.

Now that iOS 10 is in the wild, expect to see more and more app updates both in the short term – to get the new features implemented – and longer term as developers realize that the new features either don’t quite work properly, or bugs were implemented during the most recent update. When you have as many apps updated at once as we do each time a new major version of iOS is released, the number of updates that are simply bad has to go up, too.
