Tesla Motors Officially Changes Name To Tesla Much Like Apple Did 10 Years Ago

Tesla today officially changed its name from Tesla Motors, Inc, removing the reference to motors and instead simplifying the name. Tesla Motors, Inc. is now simply Tesla, Inc.

In a move that immediately reminds everyone of a similar renaming move from ten years ago in which Apple Computer became simply Apple, Tesla’s rebrand comes a few months after the company moved from its original teslamotors.com to the now familiar tesla.com.

The company now sees itself as more than a car company, especially since it bought solar panel maker SolarCity for $2 billion towards the end of 2016.

Tesla is already the maker of its solar roof tilesPowerpack and Powerwall products, showing that it is more of an energy company than a simple car manufacturer, although its focus on its line of electric cars and accompanying self-driving capabilities hasn’t taken a hit. If anything, the latter seems to have improved by leaps and bounds.

10 years ago, in January 2007, Apple made a similar proclamation when dropping the Computer part of its name. The company had just announced the iPhone, and CEO Steve Jobs was adamant that it was more than a computer company, as evidenced by the hugely popular iPod.

The iPhone then went on to be Apple’s most popular product, something that still appears unlikely to change any time soon. Apple has not looked back since it shed its tag of being a computer company, and Elon Musk will be hoping that Tesla can reap similar rewards following its own renaming.

The parallels between Apple and Tesla have long been examined, and while this change of name is only the latest in a line of similarities between the two companies, we’re sure Tesla will be only too pleased to follow in the footsteps of a company that knows no peer right now.

If Tesla is as profitable in ten years as Apple is today, things will be going very well indeed.
