The tech community had collectively declared the iPhone 5c as being a flop, but given the increased attention that Apple seems to be paying to its lower-end, polycarbonate-clad handset, the reality of the situation appears to be quite the opposite. A short while back, the Cupertino company began rolling out an even cheaper, 8GB version of its smartphone line-up’s second-in-command, and today, the handset has begun retailing in a further six nations.

The iPhone 5c has been cited by many as a failure, but while the device is assumed not to have sold in as high a number as Apple might have liked, recent predictions from analysts based upon official financial info made available by the Cupertino suggests that the device has actually fared rather well. Even though Apple hasn’t offered a breakdown of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c sales, preferring to release figures under the general, ‘iPhone’ umbrella, analysts have done their homework and found that over the holiday period of 2013, the iPhone 5c outsold many of the market’s flagship handsets.

Back in January, an interesting infographic emerged comparing the actual amount of storage space our smartphones offer versus the quoted capacity, and it showed that Samsung’s Galaxy S4 was the biggest culprit for filling devices up with bloatware. Conversely, the iPhone 5c offered the most storage for a 16GB device, and the release just yesterday of a new 8GB iPhone 5c has thrown up the fascinating statistic that in terms of actual storage, the 16GB Galaxy S4 is a mere 3.7GB ahead of Apple’s new 8GB iPhone 5c.

Amid a swirl of rumors over the past couple of days suggesting that Apple would be adding a cheaper, 8GB variant of the iPhone 5c to its smartphone roster, the company has now confirmed this to be the case, with the handset launching today in select markets.

The colorful iPhone 5c is widely regarded as a flop, and the fact that Apple remains tight-lipped about sales of its polycarbonate-clad handset speaks volumes. But while many are tipping it for the axe later on this year by the time the iPhone 6 comes around, there may still be life left in the handset yet, with leaked documents from O2 Germany appearing to suggest that an 8GB model is in the offing; and at a cheaper price point.

We hear of many unfortunate incidents where people come to harm or property is damaged when tech products spontaneously combust, but very rarely does it happen to Apple gadgets. Unfortunately, one 14-year-old girl discovered that the perceived safety and quality assurance that comes with the bitten-apple logo isn’t an exact science, as the loud pop of her pocketed iPhone 5c, followed by smoke billowing from her trousers, dramatically proved. Luckily, the student was unharmed.

Apple gadgets are not only expensive to purchase and own, but also rather pricey when it comes to repairs. After stumping up an arm and a leg for an iPhone, for example, you’re often left with sky-high bills when the worst happens, but in fairness, the Cupertino company is trying to lower repair costs with the new AppleCare+ initiative. As part of this, Apple will be replacing iPhone 5c displays in-store as of next week, according to a report over at 9to5Mac.

Apple has announced that it has reached a deal with Chinese carrier China Mobile to make the iPhone officially available on the network starting January 17, 2014. Consumer demand for the iPhone has historically been extremely high in the Chinese market, but has dwindled in recent times thanks to the availability of affordable devices from rivals Samsung and local Chinese manufacturers. The official tie-in with China Mobile will see the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c officially made available for sale through the world’s largest network starting January 14, 2014.

Earlier on this month, the Olloclip team came through with a new 3-in-1 macro lens for the iPhone 5 and 5s, and as impressed as we were with the design and features once again, we were a bit bummed that the iPhone 5c had been left out. However, it hasn’t taken long for a new, colorful 5c version to make its appearance, and with the same great, enhancing features as the corresponding version for the aluminum handsets, you can still produce some marvelous shots.

Apple’s iPhone is often cloned and bootlegged in nations such as China, but rarely does Japan get in on the act. One company, recognizing just how popular the latest and greatest iPhone 5c has been so far in Japan, has taken advantage of the situation by delivering a smartphone that, despite appearing fairly similar to its Cupertino-designed adversary, does the colorful handset a gross disservice with a bunch of crummy specs.

It’s a title that almost invites allegations of casual sexism, but stay with us a little while and hopefully all will make a little more sense. See, you know how Facebook tracks usage of its service to the nth degree and then shares that with its advertisers in order to help target ads? Well, that same information can be used to try and extrapolate usage data for specific devices across specific demographics, which is where we get the information that leads to that title. Intrigued?

If you like your news to be of the anecdotal variety then you’re in for a treat, because that’s exactly what we’ve got. If you’re also a bit keen on the iPhone 5c, then you might want to sit down, because this one’s going make you weak at the knees. According to, yes, anecdotal reports in India, Apple’s somewhat underwhelming iPhone 5c might be outselling the Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 device.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were the big releases of the time when they were made available to the public, and rightly so, but as everyone probably remembers there were also some cool new accessories to go along with each new smartphone. If you bought a new iPhone, the chances are you at least considered picking up one of the new first-party cases, and if you went through with it, you’ve no doubt also noticed a problem.

We’re all waiting, no doubt in vain, for Apple to confirm just how well the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c has sold individually rather than as a pair, but we now know just which colors buyers have been favoring thanks to a poll put together by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

A lot has been made of Apple’s decision to offer a multitude of different color options with the iPhone 5c, and naturally, every buyer of the device has been faced with the dilemma of which one to pick. After all, when you’re making such a significant investment, it’s always best not to opt for a shade you’re likely to grow quickly bored of. Thankfully, the creativity of George Michael Brower has altered the dynamic of this conundrum by helping you turn your colorful device into your very own Pokémon.

The iPhone 5c and, more so, the iPhone 5s, are two of the hottest properties in tech right now, and with the former not being as “budget” as some had hoped while the latter remains in very short supply, it stands to reason that iPhone fans may instead opt for some of the alternatives out there. As well as the scores of options from rivaling mobile vendors, there are also plenty of interesting knockoffs, and Chinese outfit GooPhone has long since been making money by essentially ripping off Apple products. In light of those recent releases, GooPhone is back with the “i5c” and “i5s” to emulate the two flagship iPhones, and I think you will agree that both are extremely convincing.

Apple has, for a long time, intended to make a more substantial effort to capture the Chinese market, and with both the new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s hitting China from the get-go, said this effort is most certainly in motion. To add to this, it would appear that the iPhone 5c and 5s have now passed the mandatory certification to carry radios compliant with China Mobile. Not only is it the largest carrier in China by a considerable distance, but it’s actually the biggest network the world over, and the grand launch should be hitting its 750 million users at some point in the near future. More details can be found right here after the leap.

The App Store is a goldmine of weird and wonderful creations, and although we see plenty of intuitive apps and wonderfully enticing games, sometimes an app comes along so novel that it just has to get a mention. If you’ve seen some of the official iPhone 5c cases, you’ll know that there’s one featuring quite a few circular holes on the back. In many ways, it could resemble a Connect 4 board, and thanks to the nous of one developer, the Hasbro classic has been remade to work in conjunction with the new case. Details after the break.

The iPhone 5s may be the latest, and technically greatest iPhone on the market, but being a new device allied to a new OS, it has been experiencing its fair share of issues. Notably, users have been reporting that apps seem to be crashing on a more frequent basis, and according to research from Crittercism, there’s actually some truth in this notion. In fact, it would seem that apps crash twice as often on the newer of the two aluminum-clad Apple handsets, and although this is perhaps to be expected given the newness of device and the software, it’s still a bit of an eye-opener.
