Thanks, my friend, it is very confusing out there, with many sites claiming unlocks and jailbreaks that aren't really there. Especially confusing with all the different firmwares, phones, bootroms, etc. etc. We appreciate your hard work! And of course, that of the other usual suspects, comex, musclenerd, planetbeing, and all of those good folks.

To everyone asking whether it works or not, no it does not. I HAVE personally tried this. It will jailbreak 4.0, but your 3GS will not be recognizable in iTunes, meaning you'll be stuck at the activation screen, since it has to activate through iTunes. I've posted a tutorial on my blog for downgrading to 3.1.3 if you get stuck on this. However, it has several prerequisites you may not be lucky enough to have, such as an old-bootrom 3GS, a Mac, and SHSH's for 3.1.2. In that case, you'll just have to restore to stock 4.0 and put up with it for now. I highly recommend you do NOT try this. As a reviewer, I had an obligation to, but since most of you are not, follow the advice and stay away.<br>Really though, people like the Dev Team and KaatjeNL are to blame here. When there aren't any official tools, people get desperate and try anything they can find. It's irresponsible to show off tools like that, getting people's hopes up, and then not release anything. Now, while this doesn't actually work, I believe MuscleNerd is wrong in that it can brick your baseband. I think he's mostly trying to scare people because of his issues with the creator of the PwnageTool mod because of some licensing nonsense that doesn't matter to the end-user. That said, DO NOT use this. While it can't brick your baseband, it can and will put you out anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour in order to restore after you find out it doesn't work.

You are indeed correct that it will prevent your device from showing up in iTunes, and, as a result, keep it from activating. So while this jailbreak sorta works, it's useless. It does NOT brick your baseband though. The Dev Team and KaatjeNL are simply fabricating lies because they are elitists who like to show off for months before releasing anything. If you do get stuck in the device not recognized issue, the tutorial on my blog for downgrading from 4.0 will work in this situation as well.
