There is a new modified version of PwnageTool floating around in the wild which promises to jailbreak iPhone 3GS on iPhone OS 4 Beta without upgrading the baseband. The creators of the original PwnageTool has confirmed that this version has been modified and redistributed without their permission, and most importantly, it doesn’t patches some important files which are required for the ultrasn0w unlock to work properly.
@iH8sn0w hah the bigger problem is people risking their baseband with this rogue pirated PT from @4n0nym0u5DEV (which doesn’t even work!)
@danielsowden nope. And it really is broken in some very important (obvious!) ways (and very risky for unlockers to use too

There has also been reports of iPhone 3GS’ not getting recognized in iTunes once jailbroken with this version of PwnageTool. Therefore it is highly suggested to stay away from this release and wait for the official version which now shouldn’t be too far away from release.
In the meantime, If you are on iPhone OS 3.1.3, you can follow our step by step guides to jailbreak iPhone 3GS with Spirit here, iPod touch 3G untethered here, and iPad on OS 3.2 here. You can also use redsn0w 0.9.3, redsn0w 0.9.4, sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool 3.1.5 to jailbreak iPhone and iPod touch. Unlocking can be done using ultrasn0w or blacksn0w.
For iPhone 3.1.2 firmware, you can use blackra1n, PwnageTool, redsn0w, sn0wbreeze, ultrasn0w and blacksn0w to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone and iPod touch.

To everyone asking whether it works or not, no it does not. I HAVE personally tried this. It will jailbreak 4.0, but your 3GS will not be recognizable in iTunes, meaning you'll be stuck at the activation screen, since it has to activate through iTunes. I've posted a tutorial on my blog for downgrading to 3.1.3 if you get stuck on this. However, it has several prerequisites you may not be lucky enough to have, such as an old-bootrom 3GS, a Mac, and SHSH's for 3.1.2. In that case, you'll just have to restore to stock 4.0 and put up with it for now. I highly recommend you do NOT try this. As a reviewer, I had an obligation to, but since most of you are not, follow the advice and stay away.
Really though, people like the Dev Team and KaatjeNL are to blame here. When there aren't any official tools, people get desperate and try anything they can find. It's irresponsible to show off tools like that, getting people's hopes up, and then not release anything. Now, while this doesn't actually work, I believe MuscleNerd is wrong in that it can brick your baseband. I think he's mostly trying to scare people because of his issues with the creator of the PwnageTool mod because of some licensing nonsense that doesn't matter to the end-user. That said, DO NOT use this. While it can't brick your baseband, it can and will put you out anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour in order to restore after you find out it doesn't work.

Thanks, my friend, it is very confusing out there, with many sites claiming unlocks and jailbreaks that aren't really there. Especially confusing with all the different firmwares, phones, bootroms, etc. etc. We appreciate your hard work! And of course, that of the other usual suspects, comex, musclenerd, planetbeing, and all of those good folks.
