Open URLs In Chrome For iOS With Ease Via Action Menu On Mobile Safari

Judging by the internet chit chat and all of the tweaks that are popping up in Cydia, it seems that Google have stumbled onto a winner with the release of Chrome for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Chrome for iOS is definitely an extremely polished app, and even out of the box, it is a worthy competition for Mobile Safari, but there are a few things that need enhancement.

One of the latest Chrome-based tweaks to make its way onto the jailbroken Cydia platform is Chrome for ActionMenu that pretty much gives away its functionality with the name. The package, developed and released by iOS developer r_plus, basically works as a plugin for the extremely useful but often overlooked Action Menu software by the hardest working developer in the community, Ryan Petrich.

For those who don’t know, the action menu functionality refers to the little popup menu that appears when a string of text or a URL is highlighted, providing a set of quick action options like copy, cut, paste, or with the use of the Action Menu tweak, the provision of a whole new array of useful options. Chrome for ActionMenu makes perfect use of this framework provided by Petrich and offers users the ability to quickly open up web links directly within Chrome through the use of this facility.

As you would expect, installing Chrome for ActionMenu also prompts the installation of the Action Menu package if it isn’t already present on the device. No additional home screen icons are installed, with all configurable options being handled directly from within the Action Menu options in the native Settings app. Users can choose to display an icon or the actual Chrome label if they so please, and also have the option to turn the menu tweak on or off.

Chrome for ActionMenu is a fairly decent tweak and no one can deny that it does exactly what it says on the tin. However, using something like BrowserChooser to set Chrome as the default web browser on the device would ensure that all web links are invoked using Google Chrome, so this may be a more elegant and robust solution.

Chrome for ActionMenu is available to download free of charge from the BigBoss repository.
