Official Readability App For iPhone And iPad Now Available For Download

E-reading has become a hugely popular pastime over the last few years – largely attributable to the release of devices such as Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iPad tablet.

It’s become a fiercely-competitive market, with companies such as Barnes And Noble also getting in on the act and releasing tablets aimed at enticing the many bookworms out there.

Not only have the device vendors and stores selling the digital books continued to thrive, but many developers have created great apps which make the reading of e-books just that little bit easier. As with most app categories, there are now more e-reading apps than one could possibly need, providing different choices to suit often the various – often fickle – requirements of consumers.

Readability

Readability is a great addition to the growing nest,  and has finally been released for iOS. It has been the subject of much delay, but as per a blog post by the Readability team, the app has now been finely-tuned, thanks, in part, to the collaborative efforts of designers at Teehan+Lax.

Readability takes advantage of typography from Hoefler & Frere-Jones, and morphs any webpage into a reading-friendly sheet  – much like the integrated Reader in the Safari app – but by using the free Readability browser add-on, you can also save pages for later viewing on your iOS device or desktop.

Anybody wishing to to access articles beyond the recents on their Reading Lists can do so by means of a paid subscription, which also offers the the ability to check out daily digest of the Reading List on the Amazon Kindle.

Of course, it’s not the first app of its kind by any means, but a combination of rich features and a clean interface is often the perfect combination for those looking for a no-frills read. There are alternatives – GoodReader for iPhone and iPad also does a stellar job, and although it isn’t free as Readability is, there is an option to test it out through a free trial.
