Grand Theft Auto, or GTA, as it is more popularly known, is one of the largest and most successful gaming franchises in the history of the industry, and the upcoming GTA 5 title due for release tomorrow is only going to strengthen that. While there are still a few hours to go to that, the official companion iOS app from Rockstar games, Grand Theft Auto: iFruit, has already gone live in the iTunes App Store.
The companion app, which is universally customized for both iPhone/iPod touch and iPad, is available for free and aims to enrich your GTA experience by offering bonus activities that connect directly to the game’s original gameplay on your favorite console. The available options cover a variety of ranges and go for something as mundane (and mindlessly-fun) as feeding a dog to customizing cars and purchasing exclusive content that you can use within Grand Theft Auto 5.
Along side offering fun activities, the app also lets you keep up to date with GTA News, connect to the Rockstar Games Social Club, keep in touch with LifeInvader, as well as launching other Rockstar Games apps should you have them installed on your device. In effect, this feels much like the Steam experience on your desktop, except that you carry this one in your pocket no matter where you are.
The best feature that iFruit offers is the ability to create and customize your vehicle for use within the actual Grand Theft Auto 5 gameplay. The customization options are plentiful, and allow you to play around with and modify pretty much every aspect of your ride. What’s more, you can even order custom license plates (which are limited, by the way, so you may want to hurry and grab those before stocks run out). The orders that you place within the app can be collected in-game either the next time you log in, or, if you do so while playing, expect a call from your nearest in-game mechanic pretty soon.
Along with all the serious, gameplay related stuff that iFruit has on offer, the app also lets you tend to a virtual pet. That’s right – that dog will do pretty much everything that you’d expect of a real one, including defecation, that you’ll have to clean up. You can teach it tricks, play fetch, let it get in wars with other owners’ creations, and have hours of mindless fun. Unless, of course, you want to stick to the business side of things.
