His instructions work, but if its a 3Gs you will get an update error, or sometimes if you've updated past the software you are trying to install, but 3G and 2G with software at 3.1.2 or lower should work fine. Apple set up the 3Gs to have to only take the latest version of software available on a restore and itunes will check when you attempt a restore. I've done it with my 3G successfully with no errors and my 3Gs gave me the error every time I tried. After you follow his instructions, you'll need an at&t sim card (I don't know if it has to be active or not, mine was) to put into the iPhone to have itunes do the initial unlock, or activation, of your software so the phone can be used w/ at&t as intended as a phone. Without this initial unlock the phone will only give you emergency calls. You can use a friends at&t sim card if an inactive one doesn't work. I would suggest they don't make any calls from the phone and check their account (pref. online) to make sure at&t didn't think they are using an iPhone and add a data plan to their account. I would also have them make a call from their own phone when they put their sim card back to make sure that is the most up to date imei number registered with at&t. Then with 3.1.2 installed on your phone its as easy as installing blackra1n on your phone via your computer (windows or mac) and using snow to unlock it. I didn't actually use snow till I went to holland in march, but its great because you can also easily input data settings to use dataplans on other networks if they allow your phone access, and you can get the correct settings which are the domain and username which will appear in the network section after you have successfully used snow to unlock your 3.1.2 firmware iPhone.
