I bought my ipad for the primary use of storing my lead sheets on it. (I play the piano for my church) I can honestly say that I LOVE it. I paid $.99 for the goodreader app and then transferred from files from my laptop. Easy! I have a couple of books on my ipad but I love the versatility that you get get with the ipad that is not on the Kindle. For a similar price - why not purchase the one with more options!

As a book reader, Kindle wins. As a flashy toy (well, not flash-y), the iPad wins. Not only will the Kindle win a 'hold its charge' contest, the battery will probably last much longer before needing replacement.

Kamal's point is why should he have to go thru the extra steps. I agreed. The comparison is between ipad and kindle. Everybody knows the ipad is much more then a reader but as a reader how does it stack up.

Yes, if your router is wireless (this days all routers are wireless and have 4 ports for direct (PC) connection (wired network). If your wireless router setup without encryption (WEP - Wireless Encryption Protocol) that requires pass or key, then you should automatically connect with Ipad WIFI and surf the internet. If your router setup to request passcode or key, then just enter it once and you will be fine. I use my Iphone and soon Ipad WIFI via wireless router at home and at many coffee shops with FREE WIFI connections...

I have a Kindle DX and I am happy with it. It is easy on the eyes, and light to carry. The lack of features that the iPad has means I am not distracted and do a lot of reading, including a lot of scientific papers.

I plan to get the iPad but I do not think the choice is either or. Rather with limited finances what is more essential for you. If reading is large part of your job, get a kindle.

It seems to me that the new iPad is a novelty. You still have to get an Internet connection for the iPad and for your money, I reckon that a laptop is the better way to go. It has versatility and while it mightn't be a gimmicky, it does the job.

I have difficulty in reading. Does the iPad have a programme such as Text-to-Speech that can read the text aloud?

Just put all your documents (pdfs, etc) online on Google docs, and then use a program such as Good Reader to easily download and read them. Easy as pie.
