iOS 6 / 6.1 Jailbreak Untethered Device Compatibility And Expected Release Date

The jailbreak community has to be commended for exercising an unprecedented level of patience while the relevant individuals and development teams have been working hard on finding the necessary components to release an iOS 6 untethered jailbreak. Over the last week we have witness the formation of the Evad3rs jailbreak team, and announcements that we can pretty much expect the jailbreak to drop almost instantly when Apple releases iOS 6.1 to the public. But today brings even more good news.

When Apple dropped the fifth beta of iOS 6.1, the leader of the iPhone Dev-Team and Evad3r’s team member MuscleNerd described the release as being on the "home stretch". We can only assume that the team is extremely confident that everything is set and in place for an almost immediate release when Apple lift the beta tag from iOS 6.1 and makes it freely available to the public through iTunes and over-the-air updates. Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.

MuscleNerd has also been answering specific queries via his personal Twitter feed, letting us know that the first public tweet from the Evad3rs Twitter account will be extremely important and will more than likely be to announce the immediate release of the latest untethered jailbreak that we have all been waiting for. In terms of supported hardware and device compatibility, he has also confirmed that all iOS devices (including the likes of iPhone 5, iPad mini, iPad 4 etc.) capable of running iOS 6.1 firmware will be compatible, with the exception of the hard to crack Apple TV 3.

Yes, you heard it right. That’s a whopping twenty-two devices that will be supported by the first Evad3r’s release and will also include the Apple TV 2 if the 6.1 firmware release for it is out in time. MuscleNerd also took the opportunity to announce that anyone following fake Evad3r’s Twitter accounts would likely "miss the excitement this week", hinting towards a possible release sometime this week, soon after Apple makes final version of iOS 6.1 public.

Here’s a full list of devices that will be supported by 6.1 untether:

  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPad 4
  • iPad 3
  • iPad 2
  • iPad mini
  • iPod touch 4
  • iPod touch 5
  • Apple TV 2

Device(s) that wont be supported:

  • Apple TV 3

So there we have it. A total of twenty-two supported devices that will include the latest Apple hardware as well as potentially liberating the second-gen Apple TV. Third-generation Apple TV owners will have to wait that little bit longer until a suitable exploit can be found, but the rest of the jailbreak community should hopefully have something to look forward to by the end of this week.

And like always, those of you who have Pre-A5 devices such as the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4 can tether-jailbreak using either Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze. For instructions, you can always follow our detailed jailbreak iOS 6 and jailbreak 6.0.1 guides posted on the site.

UPDATE x1: Apple has released iOS 6.1 for all devices. Apple TV 2 will now be supported by the upcoming untether.
