WhatsApp messenger is considered the de facto instant messaging app for many mobile device users, but since its mystical powers don’t yet – if indeed they ever will – stretch to the Apple iPad, many users of the Cupertino slab utilized the array of alternatives out there. One such app is imo Messenger, and today, it has been updated, offering a whole host of new and exciting features.
Comparing imo Messenger to WhatsApp is, in many respects, selling it a little short. After all, it does more than just instant message thanks to the new implementation of VoIP calling. VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is essentially the same medium services like Skype use to offer much cheaper voice calling services.
imo Messenger allows you to also engage in high-quality voice calls, group messaging, photo sharing, voice clip sharing, and supports a wide range of chat clients including Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Skype, MSN, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, Jabber, Hyves, VKontakte and Steam.
It will send you push notifications up to a week after you close the app (you’ll have to open the app up weekly to maintain the notifications), and it also supports multiple sessions across different devices.
The interface has been given a real tidy up, and having now reached version 2.0, the app has really matured – looking more and more like the finished article. Although we haven’t had a chance to test this update ourselves, we have encountered it before, and have always considered it to be a very solid, well-functioning app. With so many new and exciting features added to the mix, Imo Messenger is easily one of the best options out there for those looking to IM and chat on their iPad.
It is absolutely free of charge, and requires your iPad to be running on iOS 4.3 or higher in order to function. Should you find your iPad (excluding original iPad) is running on old firmware, you can simply connect your device to your PC or Mac and hit the all-epic Update button.
