Huawei is hard at work promoting its new P9 smartphone, and as well it should be. The P9 is being pushed as a highly capable camera as much as a smartphone, and Huawei is keen to show the world just how good the shooter on the device is.

In fact, the company is so keen to publicize just how impressive its dual-lens camera setup is in P9 and P9 Plus smartphones that it’s gotten a little carried away with itself by sharing a photo that wasn’t actually taken using one of its new handsets. Nope, it was taken on a professional $4,500 DSLR camera instead. Oops!

The gaffe came when Huawei posted a photo to Google+, which everyone understandably assumed had been taken by the new smartphone, but with Google+ making available all EXIF data for each uploaded image, it didn’t take long for someone to point out that the shot was actually taken on a Canon 5D Mark III with an EF70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM lens.

As great as smartphone cameras are these days, and as impressive as we are sure the P9 and P9 Plus’ dual-lens camera system actually is, there’s no competition when you start spending $4,500 on a professional Canon camera. It seems Huawei got something wrong. Something badly wrong, indeed. As soon as the internet started pointing out what had happened, the smartphone maker removed the image from its Google+ page, though by that point, the damage had been done.

Here’s the proof:

In its statement, Huawei claimed that the image was taken during the filming of an ad for the new P9 smartphone, and that it should perhaps have made that a little clearer that contrary to popular assumption, the image was not taken by a smartphone.

The photo, which was professionally taken while filming a Huawei P9 advert, was shared to inspire our community. We recognise though that we should have been clearer with the captions for this image. It was never our intention to mislead. We apologise for this and we have removed the image.

That’s a fair shout, although we can’t help but think that’s not the whole story, especially considering the photo’s caption, which seemed to imply it was taken using the P9.

We managed to catch a beautiful sunrise with Deliciously Ella. The #HuaweiP9’s dual Leica cameras makes taking photos in low light conditions like this a pleasure.
