A new accessory for the April-bound Apple Watch has just been announced, and it’s a fancy portable stand for the wearable which also serves as a charging dock. Called the WatchStand, designed and built by Griffin, head over the jump for a closer look at the accessory.
The WatchStand from Griffin is more of a nightstand-like accessory for the Apple Watch where users can simply place the wearable on the pedestal-like stand which will accommodate both the vertical and horizontal orientation of the Apple Watch. However, the stand does not come bundled with a charging cable as is the case with most Griffin products, and users will have to push in their own MagSafe charger through the stand when setting it up for the watch. Once popped into place, the MagSafe charger will make sure that the watch does not slip over from the inclined surface of the pedestal, which makes for a comfortable viewing angle as well.
The stand also has room for supporting an iPhone in landscape mode as well, where the base of the stand can work as a dock for the phone, albeit without any in-house storage for an iPhone cable. Not exactly the fanciest solution no doubt, but it does seem pretty effective given that users will be able to neatly charge both their devices in one location without all that clutter. I get that charging the Apple Watch with your usual charger is just as same, but given that you just dished out at least $349 for the Apple Watch, why not charge it with some style as well?
According to Griffin, the WatchStand will be able to support all three editions of the watch including the 38mm and 42mm variants. Given that the watch will be held in place on the sloping surface of the pedestal with the MagSafe charger’s magnetic hold, it will be interesting to see if the stand will be able to hold onto the heavier steel casing variant with the steel chains and all.
The WatchStand from Griffin will not be available in time for the Apple Watch launch on the 24th of April, and has been given a more generalized summer 2015 release time frame. Oh and the WatchStand will retail for $29.99 when released.
