This has worked for me ever since last year & it just recently stopped (i.e. when tethering is turned on, the status bar doesn't change to reflect it)… Did AT&T change anything on their network when they announced the tethering for $ option?

DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU USE SPIRIT. It will brick your phone. This is a known issue on the devteam wiki.

EASIER SOLUTION FOR TETHERING.
Don't use spirit. Jailbreak using redsn0w >0.9.4 which auto-unlocks commcenter. Then just install the mobile config listed.

I looked everywhere for a solution to fix my VVM but people are more concerned about tethering which I really do not need. I just need my Visual Voicemail to work, I hate when it calls my voicemail box then i have to wait for numerous messages. I have 3g running 3.1.2 I dont need the tethet just my vvm. My cellular data tab is missing. How can i fix all of this . this guide restored my tether options but not my vvm. Thanks though

So, I have done steps 1 and 2. However, on step three when i try to point my mobile safari browser to the link, it says Cannot Open Page “Safari cannot open the page because it could not connect to the server.” Is the link broken or is it just me?

Look under Settings -> General -> Profile

If it's the standard AT&T setting logo, then you probably have reset your network settings. That "restore to get my MMS working again" is what removed the tethering ability.

You'll have to use the jailbreak route, as far as I can tell. Sorry.

I do not see any comment on the dissapearance of the Tethering option tab in setting on iPhone. It used to be there but is now gone. Running 3.1.2 firmware – no jailbreak. Dissappeared sometime after I did the initial tether set-up and I had to do a restore to get my MMS working again. If you have knowledge to share about this I would appreciate it.
