i dont have the “::1 localhost” between “127.0.0.1 localhost” and
“74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” so i have no idea what im supposed to do!!!

Thank you ALL!!!. I upgraded to IOS4 and decided to go back to 3.1.2 using these instructions I was able to go back and restore to 3.1.2 thanks to sauriks repository

i followed the steps and it says the device is not eligibe for the restore…can anyone help ????

I have edited the host file as above and it all looks correct when I re-open the host file yet it still contacts apple and gives the message 'the device is not eligible for the requested build' Please can someone help.

try to edit the host file in the WINDOWS folder. Like the instruction tells you to do
