Windows 7 SP1 Now Publicly Available for Download

As promised, Microsoft today has released Windows 7 SP1 (Service Pack 1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Service Pack 1) to public as a free download.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 helps keep your PCs and servers on the latest support level. It also provides ongoing improvements to the Windows Operating System (OS), by including previous updates delivered over Windows Update as well as continuing incremental updates to the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 platforms based on customer and partner feedback. This enables organizations to deploy a single set of updates.
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 will help you:

Keep your PCs supported and up-to-date

Get ongoing updates to the Windows 7 platform

Easily deploy cumulative updates at a single time

Meet your users’ demands for greater business mobility

Provide a comprehensive set of virtualization innovations

Provide an easier Service Pack deployment model for better IT efficiency

The build number of final RTM version is 7601.17514.101119-1850, which means that it was compiled on 19th November 2010.

Installation notes:

Do not click download if you are updating just one computer: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you. If Windows Update is not offering you the option to install the service pack, see KB 2498452. Steps to take before installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft Download Center
If you choose to install Windows 7 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center Web site, there are steps that you can take to make sure that you have a good experience when you install the service pack. This article, KB 2505743, provides some suggestions to improve your experience when you install Windows 7 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center Web site.
In order to download and install Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 you must currently have a Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 already installed.
If you have previously installed a pre-release version of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 on your machine, you must uninstall that version before installing SP1.
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is available for installation in the same languages made available at original launch of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Download Windows 7 SP1 RTM (Final) from MSDN / TechNet

Microsoft has just released RTM (final) version of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 for their MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Public version will be available on February 22nd via Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update.

The build number of final RTM version is 7601.17514.101119-1850, which means that it was compiled on 19th November 2010.

Windows 7 RTM was announced back in July 2009. It is publicly available since the official launch, which was held on October 22nd 2009.

The Release Candidate (RC) version of Windows 7 SP1 was officially released back in October last year.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 RTM Build Leaks in the Wild

The very final RTM bits of both Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 have managed to slip through and has landed into the wild just like the previous builds 7601.16537, 7601.16543 and 7601.16562. Build number for Windows 7 SP1 RTM is 7601.17514.win7sp1_rtm.101119-1850 which means that it was compiled on 19th November 2010.

Like most of the Service Packs for Microsoft Windows, this one follows in the same direction, containing all the security and recommended updates that you would usually receive through Windows Update. According to WinRumors, Windows 7 SP1 will include RemoteFX which will provide rich 3D experience for remote computing.

This is not the first time that it has happened to some build of Windows 7. Many Windows 7 builds – including M1, Beta, post Beta, RC and RTM were all leaked before their scheduled release dates, or announcements.

Windows 7 RTM was announced back in July 2009. It is publicly available since the official launch, which was held on October 22nd 2009.

Windows 7 SP1 Release Candidate was officially released in October last year.

Windows Based Supercomputer Passes Petaflop Barrier, But Still Falls Short Of Linux

Who would’ve ever thought that a Windows based supercomputer will ever go pass the Petaflop barrier? Yes, as astonishing as it may sound but according to Microsoft, a supercomputer based on Windows crossed the petaflop barrier but fell short of a supercomputer with the same hardware configuration running Linux.

If you’re wondering what a petaflop is, here’s a quick overview from Petaflop.info:

A petaflop is a measure of a computer’s processing speed and can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second.

FLOPS are floating-point operations per second. Floating-point is considered to be a method of encoding real numbers within the limits of finite precision available on computers.

Using floating-point encoding, extremely long numbers can be handled relatively easily. A floating-point number is expressed as a basic number, an exponent, and a number base which is usually ten but may also be 2.

If all this technical gibberish went over your head, in simple layman’s terms, it means: fast, very fast! The supercomputer which was used to cross the petaflop barrier is the Tsubame 2.0. Although it’s sole OS is Linux, but it also supports running Windows HPC Server.

“We saw outstanding performance from Windows HPC Server during our Linpack benchmarking run on Tsubame 2.0,” said Satoshi Matsuoka, professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. “It broke the Petaflop barrier and was on par with Linux at this scale. In a power-optimized configuration, it recorded over a Gigaflop/Watt, showing it is nearly three times more energy efficient than an average laptop. We were very excited to see this level of performance given Windows applications will be an important part of our work with industry partners.”

Microsoft couldn’t make it to the Top500 list of world’s fastest computers around the globe due to Linux’s performance edge over Windows HPC Server by a mere 5%!! Windows 7 SP1 Release Candidate Now Available for Download

Microsoft has just released Release Candidate version of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 for users running the final RTM version of the respective operating systems.

Previously it was believed that the Redmond based software giant will release RC bits to public at the upcoming Professional Developers Conference (PDC 2010).

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Release Candidate includes previous updates delivered over Windows Update as well as continuing incremental updates to the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 platforms.

You must currently have the RTM version of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 installed before you install the Release Candidate bits of both Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. You must also uninstall any Beta version of Service Pack 1 before you proceed with installing the newly released Release Candidate build.

The final bits of Windows Server 2008 R2 (RTM Build 7600.16385) are now up on MSDN and TechNet Plus. TechNet Plus and MSDN subscribers can now download and evaluate Windows Server 2008 R2 before the official public availability in October.

As was expected, Microsoft today has released the Service Pack 2 Release Candidate build for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to general public. Just a few days ago, we posted exclusive screenshots from Windows Vista SP2 RC when it was released to Microsoft Connect testers, MSDN and TechNet subscribers.

Windows Server 2008 SP2 RC and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 RC apply to people, organizations, and technical enthusiasts who are comfortable evaluating prerelease software. This prerelease software is provided for testing only. Installation of Service Pack 2 RC will result in Microsoft collecting information about the installation process, even if the installation is not completed. We do not recommend installing this software on primary or mission-critical systems. We recommend that you have a backup of your data before you install any prerelease software.

SP2 is an update to Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers and partners. By providing these fixes integrated into a single service pack, Microsoft provides a single high-quality update that minimizes deployment and testing complexity for customers.
In addition to all previously released updates, SP2 will contain changes focused on addressing reliability and performance issues, supporting new kinds of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP2 will also continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage large installations of Windows Server 2008.

Service Pack 1 is a prerequisite for installing Service Pack 2. Please make sure that your system is running Service Pack 1 before you install Service Pack 2.
