The HD2 was HTC’s last Windows Mobile-based phone when it released in late 2009. It has, or really had, an active hacking community that made the phone do various amazing things like run Android, Windows Phone 7 and even Ubuntu-Linux. Today, we saw an all-new hack released for the HD2: it’s called USB Host and it allows your HD2 to, well, play as host device instead of client in order to connect to different USB peripherals.

Developed by the Dark Forces Team (aka the folks behind the RSPL/HSPL tool for WP7 phones), today’s USB Host brings cool new functionality to the aging HTC HD2 smartphone. Once the hack has been applied, users will be able to connect different USB devices such as mice, external hard disks, keyboards and more! For this capability, a special self-powered USB hub is required.

From XDA:

This release contains drivers designed to allow connect different USB devices to HTC LEO (HTC HD2). Those drivers designed for Windows Mobile 6.5 OS and they were successfully tested on 3.14 ROM. Other ROMs are not tested.

This release supports HID and MassStorage profiles. You can connect UsB Mouse, USB Keyboard, USB Stick, USB Hard Disk. Of course, you need enough external power for devices.

Please do not follow the guide if you do not understand the potential risks involved. Still, if you’re interested, you can follow our guide to apply the hack on your HTC HD2 device.

How To Apply USB Host Hack On HTC HD2 “Leo”

DISCLAIMER: Redmond Pie is not to be held responsible for any loss of data as a result of the malfunctioning of your HTC HD2.

Step 1: Backup data on your HTC HD2 device.

Step 2: Download DFT’s LEO USBH .rar file from here to your desktop. Extract its contents using a suitable extraction software (we recommend 7-zip).

Step 3: Connect your HD2 to your PC and transfer the .cab files extracted in Step 2 to your phone. After transferring, unplug it from the PC.

Step 4: On your HD2 go to Start > Programs > File Explorer. Using File Explorer, navigate to the folder where you transferred the .cab files.

Step 5: Now you must install the .cab files. To do this, simply tap on the file and follow the on-screen instructions. Be sure to install CotullaCert.cab and then install DFT_LEO_USBH_WM65.cab.

Step 6: Reset your device. Press the End Call key until a menu shows up allowing you to tap on Power Off. You can reboot by pressing the power button.

That’s it! If you followed the guide properly, you should have the USB Host hack applied on your HTC HD2 “Leo” smartphone. To make use of USBH, disconnect your phone from the PC, go to Programs > USBH Switch, tap on Switch to Host and connect a host device of your choice. Once you’re done playing around, you will have to reset your device again in order to go back to USB client mode.

Please note that not all USB devices are supported.

The unofficial Windows Phone 7 ROM comes to us in courtesy of the Dark Forces Team, but the downside about the whole deal is; Live services don’t work, in other words you don’t have access to pretty much everything that involves using your Live ID, but we have our fingers crossed that in the future this issue will be fixed.

We will have our own guide on how to install it soon. In the meantime, you can follow the instructions posted over at MobileTechWorld here.

Officially speaking, HTC’s HD2 will not be getting a Windows Phone 7 upgrade. All because it doesn’t comply with WP7’s hardware specifications. And what hardware specs, you might ask? Not having three buttons! Yes, HD2 won’t get WP7 all because it has two extra buttons despite the fact that it meets all other specifications.

(image via jorkew)

PocketNow has picked up a seemingly working WP7 port to HTC HD2. Developed by Cotulla, the video embedded below shows the HD2 allegedly booting into WP7. This does look real-er than the previous ports but Cotulla says that it is just a DFT team test and he doesn’t want you to pester him with questions about release date. He does, however, say that the future will show all.

The WP7 port for HD2 will inevitably come. We’ll just have to wait for the developers community to come up with something so that people can keep on enjoying the phone that ended Windows Mobile OS on a high note.

Remember when we informed you last time about Android port which was in works for HTC HD2? Well guess what? Just like the Android port for iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G, it is now a reality on HD2 too, with Android 2.1 dual booting side by side with Ubuntu Linux “Karmic Koala”, and Windows Mobile 6.5 with HTC Sense. Check out the video after the break.

The current release may not be very stable, but it looks really promising! The screen is working flawlessly and responds as if it would on any Android device. The people responsible behind this port call themselves HTC Linux and we’re pleased with the work they’ve put into making this a dream come true. At the moment though, Android 2.1 and Ubuntu both are a little buggy, but these bugs are being worked on and hopefully will be removed with time. Now if only we could get Android 2.2 from Nexus One on this monster of a device, that would be something!!

If you are feeling adventurous, head over to XDA-Developers forums now and grab all the necessary stuff to get this working. We will do a step by step guide of our own soon. Stay tuned for that!

Builds

Ubuntu ‘Karmic Koala’ for HD2 version 0.1

Needs Storage Card with at least 2GB free space. Recommended is a fast Storage Card (Class 4 is ok)
This is intended to be used as a netbook/desktop type setup with keyboard and mouse connected via USB. Check this site for information on how to do this.
Be sure to read included README.txt for install instructions, features and developer information.
Quick instructions: Put the ubuntu directory into the main/root directory of your Storage Card and tap HaRET executable.
Size: 635M
md5sum: 327a4b2c17e14dd5649964fe18f837e9
Mirrors:
http://linuxtogo.org/~lgorris/hd2/hd2-ubuntu_0.1.zip

Android 2.1

Random files for testing
http://media2a.com/android/Android_Boot_Test_TS.zip
Just extracted to Storage Card root directory and tap run HaRET executable.

Here is a video of it in action.

So there you have it, a great way to turn your phone into an HTC EVO 4G but without the 4G capabilities of course, and with an option of running Ubuntu as well. Do you think it would be fair to call the HD2 a lite version of the EVO 4G (without 4G), since most of the hardware specs are same as the HTC EVO 4G, and now that it can also run Android 2.1 alongside Windows Mobile 6.5.

UPDATE 1: And here it is running on my European version of HTC HD2 !

Oh and this image (compressed) was taken from my iPhone 4.

The KIN phone has a really neat looking UI which appeals to quite a a lot of teens out there. Unfortunately though, the KIN didn’t get all the attention which it should have got. And now without having to buy a KIN phone, you can get that same interface on your Windows Mobile based phone as a theme using the KIN Launcher.

The KIN launcher though does not offer the same UI transitions as we’ve seen on the KIN ONE and KIN TWO phones. It also lacks option for adding favorite contacts on the homescreen, but this at the moment is as close as you can get to the KIN phone without having to own one. Hopefully, all these shortcomings will be added in future versions.

Check out this video below, demonstrating the KIN Launcher on HTC HD2.

If you’re one of those who don’t want to spend some cash on a KIN phone and luckily you have a Windows Phone lying at home, then the KIN launcher is the best option to turn to if you want to get the KIN experience on your phone (not the full experience of course). KIN Launcher for Windows phones can be downloaded from here. [via WMPoweruser]

Android 2.2 aka Froyo is without a doubt the best version of Android OS that we have seen yet! The main thing which everyone was interested to find out was about the speed of the browser which Google claims to be the fastest amongst any of the mobile web browsers available on any platform today.

Google really got everyone excited in a demo at the I/O 2010 in which they showed Android 2.2 web browser on Nexus One running faster than Safari on the iPad. Now whether Google’s claim of Froyo having the fastest mobile browser on the planet is true or not can be seen in the video attached below. The video compares the web browser in newly released Android 2.2 (running on Nexus One) with that of Safari running on iPhone 3GS and Opera Mobile on HTC HD2.

Check out the video below to see which phone and browser comes out on top!

So is Google making up things by themselves? or has Flash 10.1 slowed things down a bit for them on Nexus One? Is Steve Jobs right about Flash as a thing of the past? Is iPhone better off without Flash? We’ll soon do a video of our own to answer all those questions. Stay tuned! [via PocketNow]

We have previously seen different Windows phones like HTC Touch Pro2, Touch HD and Touch Diamond2 running Android OS through an emulation software named Haret. For different reasons, developers so far have not been able to do the same for HTC HD2 which by far is the most superior Windows phone available today.

And now, a major breakthrough has been made over at XDA. The genius have managed to get the Linux bootloader up and running on the HD2 which has enabled them to play a 720p high-def video on the device. This marks a really important step in the Android port for the HD2. Hopefully in the not so distant future, we’ll see HD2 running a fully functional version of Android, just like the one for iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G. We’ll keep you posted on this one. Check out the video yourself of the HD2 running a 720p video on top of the Linux bootloader.

If the port is successful, it wont be wrong to call HD2 a variant of EVO 4G (without 4G capabilities) do you think it would be fine to call the HD2 a lite version of the EVO 4G (without 4G) since most of the hardware specs are same on the HTC EVO 4G, except that it runs Android 2.1 instead of Windows Mobile 6.5. [via PocketNow]

The first American 4G phone, the HTC EVO 4G will hit the shelves on 4th of June for US $199 on a two year contract with Sprint. Since both the HTC HD2 and HTC EVO 4G shares almost same specs (hardware wise), the comparison between the two is evitable. One runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 (HTC HD2) while the other runs on Android 2.1 with HTC Sense (EVO 4G).

The guys at Pocketnow recently got their hands on the EVO 4G, and shot a little video comparing it with HD2 and Nexus One: showing the difference in network speeds (between 3G and 4G), camera, size, among various other things. Since New York doesn’t support 4G network at this moment, the EVO 4G was using Sprint’s 4G hotspot which was created outside in a truck of the event’s premises. Due to this, it lacked the speed which the 4G network promises. You can check out the video and see it for yourself.

Which one do you prefer now? the HTC EVO 4G running Android, or the HTC HD2 running Windows Mobile on a 3G network? [via PocketNow]

One common misconception about Windows Mobile platform is that it lacks gaming abilities. You might want to reconsider this after you watch this video of PlayStation emulator (FPSECE) running some PlayStation titles like Tekken 3 and others on HTC HD2.

This new release version 0.10.1 of the emulator without any doubt has transformed the HTC HD2 into a hardcore gaming device. Taking full advantage of HD2’s hardware, the FPSECE emulator takes gaming to a whole new level. Now you will have another reason to get your hands on the HD2 even though it is not getting WP7 upgrade officially this fall. Check out the video below which shows PlayStation’s Tekken 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Time Crisis, Wipeout XL and Grand Theft Auto 2 running flawlessly on HD2.

FPSECE is totally free, and you can get it off the official website here. However there is one shortcoming right now, it wont support every PlayStation game so check out the list of games before trying them out on FPSECE. [via WMPoweruser]
