Instagram 2.1 Now Live In App Store, Features New Filter, New UI & More – Download Now

When Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom first received funding for their ‘Burbn’ project, I don’t think they could have imagined the rollercoaster ride they were about to embark on which led them to changing the name of their project to Instagram, launching in the iPhone App Store in 2010 and quickly becoming the proud parents of one of the most loved and used applications around today.

The last figures which were released had the Instagram network with over ten million registered users who had uploaded and shared more than one hundred and fifty million photographs through the application. So just what makes the Instagram application so popular? Well, first and foremost, the iOS user base has clearly taken the application into their hearts and made it a huge success which it is today. With an Android version on the way, it is likely that the popularity will grow even further when the user base expands across different platforms.

The fact that the Instagram application offers a core feature set and executes those features perfectly through extreme simplicity also adds to the app’s popularity. Burbn Inc. have taken the opportunity this evening to push out the latest update to the Instagram app which takes it to version 2.1 and is live in the App Store as we speak for users to update to. The latest update offers a blend of new features and additions mixed with improvement upgrades to the existing functionality.

Although I don’t share the opinion personally, one of the main complaints I have heard about previous versions of Instagram relates to the rather stale UI which people believed was in need of a change. Well, that change has come in version 2.1 with an extremely simplified and improved design. The application still follows the tried and tested tab bar navigation setup but the trappable buttons which navigate through the various sections have been altered and replaced with a new understated set of graphics.

The already extensive filters which were available to enhance the user’s photographs have received a new addition in the ‘Sierra‘ filter which adds a new dimension for users. The developers have also included an entirely new way of enhancing photographs with the addition of the ‘Lux’ button in the bottom left hand corner of the photo editing view. When tapped, the Lux option seem s to visibly sharpen the photograph and makes it immediately more vivid to the eye.

Improvements have been made to the user profile section, with users now able to change their profile picture from within the profile page. The official release notes for version 2.1 of the Instagram application read as follows:

Introducing Sara: The Latest Siri Clone Which Works On All iOS Devices – Download Now

Ever since Siri was introduced on the iPhone 4S along with iOS 5 back in October, coders and developers have been looking to manipulate it in a variety of ways – with some interesting results.

That interest transcended greatly with the release of the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak in December, and perhaps more so the following month when the A5 Absinthe jailbreak was unveiled for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.

Up until now, the best way to install Siri on an unsupported device has been Spire. Released in December, it’s pretty straightforward to set up, requiring users to connect to a proxy server in order for the various commands to be answered by Apple’s pocket slave.

It seemed inevitable that there would be more in the way of Siri alternatives, though, and a Vietnamese dev team has produced a new, and apparently much more advanced iteration, which operates under the effeminate pseudonym of Sara. This free voice recognition utility takes it a little further than merely setting reminders or driving users crazy with nonsensical conversation, and appears to be much more versatile – allowing users to train it to accept new commands.

It’s described by its creators as having an "open" brain, allowing those in the know to create plug-ins for special commands fairly simply. With Cydia home to so many disciples, we very much doubt there will be a shortage of said plug-ins once Sara is adopted by the masses.

At this point, though, the feature set remains impressive indeed, the clincher being its ability to scan barcodes and QR codes and indicating which businesses in a user’s locale sell that particular product or service.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing about Sara is that it works in a variety of countries aside from the States – which gets clear favoritism when it comes to Siri. Furthermore, it’s available in no fewer than 37 languages – and all this after supposedly only a month’s development.

So, how can we get hold of it? Well, all you need to do is add the following repository to your Cydia source list: http://isoftjsc.com and download the version specific to your device. The version listed in the repo says 0.1 at time of writing, but there are plans to update it in the very near future, so keep checking Cydia for any changes.

You will obviously need to jailbreak your device to install this tweak. For jailbreaking iPhone 4S and iPad 2, you can simply follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Absinthe on Windows or Mac. For those of you with iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touches can use Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze to untether jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.

Use The Power Of Siri To Quickly View Your Twitter Timeline With TweetLine Tweak For iPhone

When iOS 5 was first introduced to the world for public consumption in October 2011, it was immediately evident that it contained a number of highly useful features which would quickly become the focus of the jailbreaking development community. The introduction of Notification Center was seen as a huge, much needed feature addition to iOS, but also provided an entirely new entity for developers to hook into and enhance on a jailbroken device.

Upon launch, Notification Center did receive a lot of development attention, purely because when it was invoked by the user it offered a lot of screen real estate for widgets to be embedded into, and also because it was a software addition and not hardware specific making it readily available across the both iPads, three iPhone models and a number of iPod touches – basically any device capable of running iOS 5. One of the other hugely popular enhancements which came with iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S was Siri, the intelligent voice assistant, into which developers were chomping to get their teeth into.

The problem with Siri is; it is exclusive, by official measures, to the iPhone 4S hardware and due to the initial lack of a jailbreak for A5-powered devices running iOS 5, it was very difficult for developers to create and test any Siri-based tweaks. That quickly changed when the ‘Dream Team’ released the Absinthe tool to provide an untethered jailbreak for all A5 devices, which in turn opened the flood gates for the Siri enhancements.

One of the latest tweaks, which aims to provide additional functionality to Siri is called ‘TweetLine’ and is an AssistantExtensions plugin, providing Twitter integration through the registered Twitter account in the Settings application. By activating Siri through the normal method and giving the spoken command ‘timeline’, the TweetLine tweak forces Siri to display the latest five tweets from your Twitter timeline. TweetLine is built upon the AssistantExtensions tweak which allows developers to quickly and efficiently develop enhancements for Siri and is also featured as part of the recently launched iOSOpenDev project which aims to make open developer easier on iOS devices.

In all honesty, TweetLine is functional and potentially quite useful if it was extended and built upon to feature additional commands. At the moment, when the ‘timeline’ command is given, the last five tweets from the timeline are shown in plain text with usernames and any links being redundant. The functionality ends with being able to quickly read the tweets and scroll up and down on the tweet sheet that is provided within the Siri interface. TweetLine could prove useful if you wanted to quickly check your timeline when in a busy situation, but other than that, its limited functionality puts it under the ‘download and use it a few times because its free’ category.

Lovestagram Is Instagram For Lovers, Developed By Instagram Co-Founder’s Girlfriend For Valentine’s Day

Even the most hardcore of geeks need a little bit of tenderness in their lives every now and then, which is why coders all over the world will be winding down this Tuesday for an evening of romantic loveliness with their significant other. But just what kind of gift do you get for your loved one? You could try treating them to a romantic meal at a posh restaurant, send them a bouquet of flowers to their workplace or maybe just a simple expression of love through a Valentine’s Day card?

Well, if you are Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger’s girlfriend, none of the above was good enough for her man which is why she took St. Valentine’s Day to the next level and launched her own interactive Valentine’s Day card maker which she has called Lovestagram. Kaitlyn Trigger has been dating Krieger since before his popular photo sharing application was launched and decided that as an expression of her love she would go above and beyond the traditional gifts by learning how to code and developed her very own e-card creating application which is built upon the Instagram API.

The lovingly named Lovestagram application works by creating a slideshow of photographs that have been shared between two users on the Instagram network by using usernames, photos shot in the same location with an hour of each other or the exchange of comments. The application is extremely simple in its usage and requires the user to log in using your own Instagram username and then simply enter the username of your significant other.

Lovestagram doesn’t have a requirement that you are in love with the person you create the card for, and it will work with any username you enter. Although you may look a bit silly sending an interactive card to a work colleague considering at the present time all of the frames contained within the app are love themed. The developer is currently considering whether or not to expand the application to include alternative frames which may cover holidays, birthdays or even anniversary cards in the near future.

Trigger describes Lovestagram as “basically letting you look through your relationship in photos“, which I have to admit is something that would appeal to me if only my other half was an Instagram user. The creation of such an application for her loved one is a romantic enough gesture, but the fact that Kaitlyn actually had to teach herself Python, Django, HMTL, CSS, jQuery and Photoshop to accomplish the task, makes the gesture even more thoughtful and special.

Rumor has it that Instagram co-creator Krieger knows that Trigger has a project in the works, but supposedly has no clue about what the site is. I think that in the next couple of days the coverage on tech sites might just let the cat out of the bag.

Swipe Navigation For Music Tweak In Cydia Brings Track Changing Via Swipe Gestures

I don’t know if it is something that has been out into the global water supply recently, but swiping seems to be the new tapping. Why take the time to lift your finger up and decompress a button when you can feel manly and powerful enough by quickly swiping your finger across the screen to achieve the same result? I certainly know which one I prefer.

One of the beautiful, and most important things about jailbreaking an iDevice is having the power and the freedom to modify and change the default behavior of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS. Don’t get me wrong, a totally stock iOS is infinitely better than any of the competition in my personal opinion, but a user enhanced iOS with the right modifications totally blows its rivals away. Some users of jailbroken devices like to modify the operating system beyond recognition by changing icons, wallpapers and even fonts as well as behaviors, while others simply prefer subtle behavioral modifications to make things a little more efficient from a user experience point of view.

There is no denying in certain areas that having the ability to perform a task with a swipe is a much more elegant solution than having to bash your way through various buttons or taps. The elegance of a swipe is one of the reasons tweaks such as Activator, Zephyr and SBSettings have been so popular. As Leonardo Da Vinci famously said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication", and when you can bypass a long winded action with a simple user swipe, it isn’t hard to see why these gestures reign supreme.

Developer Chris Kant has recognized this and with the release of his ‘Swipe Navigation For Music’, he has attempted to integrate the powerful user swipe gesture into the stock iOS Music application to flip through tracks from the Now Playing screen. The theory behind the tweak is that a simple swipe forward will move into the next available track in the playlist, with a backwards swipe playing the previous song. As standard, the Music application already has a ‘back’ swipe gesture built into it which takes the user back to the library of songs but the intention of Swipe Navigation For Music is to disable that default behavior and replace it with the tweak’s own rules.

In theory, the Swipe Navigation tweak is a good one and whilst it doesn’t really provide any time-saving benefits, it is a handy little modification to have. After an initial hiccup with the submission of the tweak’s package which caused the first 1.0 version to fail, a new 1.0-2 version is now available which works perfectly. After installation, the Music application behavior is altered; allowing easy swipe navigation onto the next available song as well as replaying the previous tune. It may sound quite odd, but it is actually an extremely satisfying feeling to swipe the album artwork and watch the new artwork of the next song slide in elegantly from the side of the media player. While Swipe Navigation For Music isn’t going to be classed as an essential, must-have tweak; it certainly is an accomplished and very handy little mod to have.

If you are interested, they are alternative options available if you want this functionality in your Music application? Activator is always a good second choice and can easily be configured to offer similar track changing controls. By going into the Activator options, I was able to replicate the behavior by selecting the ‘In Application‘ setting and then selecting the ‘Slide in Gesture’ options. By setting ‘From Screen Left‘ to next track, and ‘From Screen Right‘ to previous track, the behavior of Swipe Navigation For Music is effectively replicated.

One thing that I do love about certain developers within the community is the swift response they provide to email support requests, and in the case of Christ Kant; this was certainly the case as he replied extremely quickly to inform me that version 1.0-2 had been pushed to resolve any issues I was having. As mentioned above, this is certainly not an essential tweak, but considering it is free of charge and extremely lightweight, it is definitely one worth trying out from the BigBoss repository.

Tweetbot 2.0 For iPhone Now Available For Download, Features Major Speed Improvements And More

The sheer number of Twitter applications available for the iPhone often makes choosing just one a very difficult choice for users. The official Twitter app is free of charge, but generally represents a love it or hate it situation amongst users with a large number of regular iOS Twitter users opting to look elsewhere for on-device Twitter usage. If you ask any seasoned iPhone user which Twitter application they prefer, the same handful of names generally pop up and usually includes the likes of Osfoora, Echofon, Twittelator Neue, Tweetbot and Twitterific.

Out of those apps mentioned, Tweetbot by Tapbots seem to have gained the most critical acclaim and is widely considered to be an extremely polished and complete iPhone and iPod touch Twitter application. The developers have today taken the opportunity to push out their latest update for the Tweetbot application which takes it to version 2.0 and is available as a free of charge update to existing app owners. When Tweetbot was first launched on April 2011, it was regarded as a breath of fresh air due to the highly customized user interface, sound effects and the use of innovative gestures to activate certain features, but there were certain finishing touches missing from the app which held it back.

The last update to Tweetbot came in August of last year, so version 2.0 has been nearly six months in the making; giving the developers time to focus in implementing new features, and also changing the way existing features are handled. The official list of changes in version 2.0 details significant changes to the user’s timeline and direct messaging system with the Tapbots’ blog offering the following change log:

Updated timeline view
- Image thumbnails in timeline
- Links now colored and single-tappable
- “Retweeted by” bar now integrated and tappable
- Cell colors adjusted for better contrast
New direct message view.
Redesigned “New Tweets” bar (Can be dismissed by tap and configured in Settings > Display)
Timed auto-refresh (timeline, mentions, and DM’s will refresh every 5 minutes)
Readability added as mobilizer service
Much improved tweet replies view
Links in user’s bio now tappable
“Huge” font size option in Settings > Display
Improved scrolling performance

The new direct messaging system offers a visual upgrade as well as a new streamlined view which makes reading DM conversations a lot easier and makes the private messaging side of things more like an instant message conversation which is how it should have always been in my opinion. The timeline and DM views also get a new automatic refresh feature which pulls in new tweets, mentions or messages every five minutes as long as the app is open and active. A new information bar is also present; when new tweets are available in your timeline it tells you how many new tweets have been pulled in and can be dismissed with a single tap.

One of the previous problems with the earlier version of Tweetbot was the way the application handled links, which were embedded within tweets. Previously, to select a link the user had to click the tweet once to ‘activate’ it, and then select the link itself to actually redirect to the URL. This has been eradicated in version 2.0, with links new appearing in a highlighted blue color and can be activated with a single tap.

The browser view, which opens up when selecting a link also got an overhaul with a new Readability option being integrated as well as social sharing options such as Facebook and Twitter. Although I can’t quite figure out why a Twitter sharing option would be needed which requires permission to be granted to share a link which has been opened through a Twitter client. A simple toggle has been integrated into the new browser which also formats any web page into a more readable text format, very similar to the ‘Reader’ feature in Mobile Safari.

The whole application feels a whole lot smoother, and the speed improvements are immediately noticeable. One of the best feature added in today’s update in my opinion are the inline images, which show up in the timeline view, giving users a quick look at the image instead of having to tap a link to view in a separate window. A pet peeve of mine on most Twitter applications is also the fact that links and accounts which exist within user profiles are never selectable, which is something that has been rectified in Tweetbot 2.0 to my delight.

The improvements in version 2.0 of Tweetbot definitely make the whole experience a much more pleasurable one, and whilst I would have previously been a little hesitant to use Tweetbot as my main iPhone Twitter app, version 2.0 has ensured that it is now my first choice.

ContactPrivacy Tweak Offers Alert Notifications When An App Attempts To Access Address Book

The ‘Path’ iOS application will no doubt go down as one of the most popular applications of 2011 thanks to its mix of having an innovative and beautiful user interface as well as operating as an extremely functional journal-type app. Although the Path app had been around since November 2010, the 2.0 release in final quarter of last year introduced a revamped UI which gained the application quite a lot of media attention and a large amount of new users.

As is usually the case with stories such as this, when an application is trusted by the public’s eye, people start paying close attention to the performance of the app and picking up anything behind the scenes which may look a little suspicious. In the last day or so, the Path developers have come under fire after developer Arun Thampi recently blogged about his discovery that his entire address book was being upload to Path’s servers in the form of a plist without any prior permission given. To make sure that his findings were accurate, Thampi created an entirely new Path account and once again found that the names, telephone numbers and email addresses of all contacts in his address book were sent to Path-owned servers without permission.

Path CEO, Dave Morin was quick to respond to the findings, and addressed the issue by confirming that the address book data was indeed sent to Path but only to help users connect with their friends and family who may use the Path journal service.

We upload the address book to our servers in order to help the user find and connect to their friends and family on Path quickly and effeciently as well as to notify them when friends and family join Path. Nothing more.

As you might expect, the discussion thread continue and blew up quite quickly with other well known iOS developers getting involved to not only query why Path required the data, but also to ask Mr. Morin why the application never prompted users to opt-in to the address book submission and instead just liberated the data. The Path CEO retorted by confirming that a new opt-in policy is up for approval in version 2.0.6 of the Path app.

We proactively rolled out an opt-in for this on our Android client a few weeks ago and are rolling out the opt-in for this in 2.0.6 of our iOS Client, pending App Store approval.

If you are a jailbroken iOS device user, and the story of data submission without permission has put you on the edge then you may be pleased to know that popular developer Ryan Petrich has acted swiftly to release his ‘ContactPrivacy’ tweak. The function of this tweak is pretty self explanatory, with the release notes even going as far to say that it has been inspired by the recent Path story.

ContactPrivacy provides an alert view on the device display whenever any application is attempting to access the device’s address book. The alert allows the user to allow or deny the request and also contains a user information warning which states that not all applications can continue to work if the request is revoked.

ContactPrivacy is a free of charge tweak and should provide piece of mind to any new Path users until the opt-in feature is released in the next version.

Use YouTube Producer For iPhone To Add Copyright Free Music To Your Videos Then Upload To YouTube

I don’t know about you, but I tend to favor mobile applications which do exactly what they say on the tin without attempting to deviate too much from the core functionality. One of the more recent applications which falls into this category has to be YouTube Producer for iOS devices by Musicshake Inc.

YouTube Producer is designed to appeal to individuals who regularly create videos, but struggle to match the content with the perfect soundtrack. The application offers users tens of thousands of music tracks which are free of charge and devoid of any copyright limitations. The music can be added to an existing video using the YouTube Producer application, and then uploaded to a YouTube account.

Users who regularly create video based content for YouTube might have fallen victim in the past to the copyrighted music limitations that exist in YouTube. When uploading a video with a soundtrack, the content runs the risk of being removed without any warning due to not having the copyright owner’s permission to use the sound file. Users can rest easy that when using YouTube Producer this will never occur, due to all of the sound files being totally free.

The selection library contained within YouTube Producer is extremely diverse and offers a great selection which can be filtered and searched by genre, mood or tempo making sure users can find the perfect track to suit the video mood. But whilst the library is extensive, the overlay limitations somewhat hinder the application. Users are limited as to where they can actually place the sound file, and at present it, can only be sent to play in the background of the full movie file, so setting it as a part of the introduction or setting different tracks for different sections of the video is not possible.

One option which is available, is the ability to directly control the music volume, allowing the track to be extremely prominent in the playback or to fade subtly into the background. Users can also mix the new track in with the existing video’s audio, or choose to replace the sound altogether.

YouTube Producer is not an application which allows video recording or editing features. The application is designed to offer two essential functions – to add copyright-free soundtrack to an existing video file and to upload that file to a registered YouTube account.

YouTube Producer offers simple functionality, but does it well. The user interface is intuitive and very easy to use and navigate. It would be nice to see some additional options in future updates which allow additional control over how the music is embedded into the file, but until then; YouTube Producer does exactly what it says on the tin and fills a unique void on the App Store.

Black SMS App For iOS Encrypts Your Messages From Those Prying Eyes – Download Now!

Of all the areas of our smartphones we’d call the most precious, text messages would be somewhere near the summit. On top of that, it’s one of those segments we like to keep the most private – obscured from the eyes of those prying brown-nosers.

If you don’t want the abject hassle of a passcode unlock every time you wish to use your iOS device, Apple doesn’t offer anything at stock level to protect your sensitive correspondence. As a result, one has to keep one’s device in close proximity, for fear of an inevitable Wikileaks-style dilemma revealed by those more concerned with the business of others.

Okay, so maybe I did get a little carried away, but the point remains – messages should be read by the intended recipient. Check the bottom of any e-mail from a company or official firm, and you will see a footnote as such. If you’re running a jailbroken device, this issue is easily remedied, since there are many small tweaks allowing messages to be hidden under lock and key. Moreover, BiteSMS – arguably the ultimate SMS tool for iOS – offers a passcode feature as standard, and I, sidetracking momentarily, would love to see a revamp of the Messages app in the image of BiteSMS sometime in the future; iOS 6 maybe.

If you’re not jailbroken, options are limited, and having used the likes of Lockdown in the past, I know firsthand how susceptible such apps are to circumvention. A new app, though, which operates under the name Black SMS, takes things a step further, allowing messages to be sent as encrypted, and relying on the recipient to decrypt the message using a password you have set.

Of course, it’s probably not your ideal day-to-day solution, but if you’re sharing really sensitive information, you’ll even be able to keep the wider audience (euphemizing The Man) off your back.

A free, decrypt-only iteration of Black SMS will soon be available over at the App Store, but for the time being, you can grab the normal version for a dollar.

Easily Record Skype Or VoIP Calls With SkyRecorder App For iPhone

The good people over at eFusion have introduced an application to the App Store which offers the ability for users to record conversations which are taking place via services such as Skype, or through the use of other Voice Over IP services such as the iOS Viber application. The application is called SkyRecorder, and is predominantly aimed at people who find themselves on a VoIP call and need to take down notes but are unable to for whatever reason.

SkyRecorder offers the ability to record the full VoIP conversation into an audio session, and clearly records both sides of the conversation which gives context at a later date for note taking and referring back to specific points. The application offers a simple, single touch recording function to begin the process and does not limit the amount of time that it can record, although storage space is obviously device dependent and requires the iPhone to have sufficient free internal storage.

SkyRecorder also offers users the ability to import and export the saved audio sessions, as well as an elegant method of restarting the recording; should it be interrupted by an incoming telephone call through the actual Phone application on the device. For those wondering, SkyRecorder does not have the ability to record standard telephone calls, and will only work with VoIP services such as Skype and Viber.

There is no denying that the features of SkyRecorder can be used to record a conversation with the recipient’s knowledge, but the focus of the application is to act as a virtual notepad; meaning, that you no longer have to try to recall certain parts of the conversation from memory. If you have ever ended a Skype call, then tried to remember what was said, or struggled to remember names, dates or specific conversation details then SkyRecorder will alleviate those worries.

SkyRecorder for iPhone and iPod touch features an extremely minimalistic user interface design, but benefits from the following feature set:

Unlimited recording time
Restart recording after an interruption from an incoming cellular call on iPhone
Supports external stereo mic
Audio file export/import over USB using iTunes (.wav format only)
Supports any computer OS (Mac, Windows, Linux, etc.) to play recorded files
Simple user interface

The application is not a universal app, but will operate in the iPad as well in 1x and 2x compatibility mode and requires iOS 4.3 or above. The simple user interface means that after launch, the user simply needs to tap the ‘Record’ button and then switch over to the preferred VoIP application to make the call which is to be recorded. SkyRecorder also supports recording through the device’s speakerphone but this requires the call to be initiated in the first instance, and then switched over to SkyRecorder to record.

Obviously, the idea of recording a full conversation, regardless of whether it is a standard voice call or through a VoIP service, is an extremely sensitive one and the user of SkyRecorder should have the other person’s permission before starting the recording. For the sake of clarity, it is also worth mentioning that SkyRecorder and the developers, eFusion, are in no way linked with Skype, Viber or any other VoIP service provider.

For a price of just $1,99, its not that bad either.
