Apple To Reportedly Drop Apple Music Subscription Price By 20%

Apple Music users may be about to have a little more cash in their pocket if claims by two sources close to the streaming service are to be believed. They both claim that Apple is considering the possibility of dropping the price it charges for access to the music streaming service.

According to the sources, who do not work within Apple but are affiliated with Apple Music in some way, both the single user and family plans are in scope for the price drop, with the former dropping from $9.99 to $7.99 per month and the latter from $14.99 to $12.99. Student rates are expected to stay as they are now – a bargain-tastic $4.99 per month.

The report notes that the move could come as part of a Christmas promotion in the lead up to the holiday season, presumably hoping to catch new iPhone and iPad owners whilst the glow of a fancy new gadget is still strong.

The publication does not make it clear as to whether the promotion would stay in effect post-Christmas with the reduced prices continuing into the new year or whether the normal monthly costs would return, but given the pricing offered by the likes of Amazon for its Music Unlimited streaming service at $7.99 per month for Prime subscribers, we do wonder if a permanent price drop would be wise at this point.

Apple Music has been around since June of 2015 and whilst not the knockout success Apple would have hoped for, it has more than held its own against more established firms such as Spotify. A price drop, especially around Christmas, could see Apple’s music streaming service take on a good chunk of users this December alone.

It’s worth remembering that Apple Music is a cross-platform service as well, with both iOS and Android owners able to take advantage of it, which ensures its potential user base is every bit as large as the competition.
