Apple Signs Multi-Year Deal With Oprah Winfrey For Original TV Shows

Apple continues its expansion into the world of TV show content with confirmation today that it has signed a multi-year deal with Oprah Winfrey with whole new shows in the works.

The shows are said to be part of a new video subscription service that Apple continues to work towards, according to The Wall Street Journal.

While we do not yet know what kinds of shows will be created as part of the new partnership, Apple did confirm via its press release that we can expect the company’s new partnership with Winfrey to result in “original programs.”

Apple today announced a unique, multi-year content partnership with Oprah Winfrey, the esteemed producer, actress, talk show host, philanthropist and CEO of OWN.

Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world.

Winfrey’s projects will be released as part of a lineup of original content from Apple.

Apple continues to sign deals that will see a number of new TV shows be made for the as-yet unannounced subscription service with the first of those possibly ready for early 2019. Apple will need to get all of its ducks in a row as far as the new subscription services is concerned ahead of then though, meaning we would expect some sort of announcement before the end of the year.

Today’s announcement is the latest in a long line which appears to have Apple ready to position itself as a direct Netflix competitor, although it is unlikely that Apple services will be as widespread as that offered by Netflix. We don’t expect to see Apple’s own offerings appearing on smart TVs alongside Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, for example.
