Apple Offering One-Month Free iCloud Storage Plan Upgrade, Here Are The Details

The chances are that if you have the base 5GB iCloud storage plan that you have received an alert in the iOS Settings app telling you that your iCloud storage is running low and you should upgrade.

As part of an attempt to try and entice consumers into going through that upgrade process, Apple is now offering the first month of the upgrade entirely free-of-charge.

iCloud is Apple’s cloud-based storage platform which stores a lot of data for each user – on the basis that they have iCloud enabled on their account and device, of course. That data can include contacts, an entire backup of the device, and even documents and app-based data from first and third-party apps.

For those who have high capacity devices, or who have multiple Apple devices all linked to one Apple ID and iCloud account, it doesn’t take long for the free 5GB storage tier to become redundant. A lot of device owners immediately resign themselves to the fact that 5GB is just not enough storage and immediately upgrade to one of Apple’s higher storage options and put themselves into a recurring subscription situation to keep that new storage amount.

On the other hand, some users simply aren’t happy with Apple’s base tier and are of the opinion that it’s purposely designed on the knowledge that almost everyone with iCloud enabled will need to upgrade or resign themselves to the fact that they cannot do regular iCloud backups. To try and alleviate those concerns, Apple is now offering the first month of any upgraded iCloud tier entirely free-of-charge.

As mentioned, this new initiative by Apple is alerted to the user when they try to do back up their device to iCloud but don’t have enough space left on their free tier to do so:

You do not have enough space in iCloud to back up your iPhone. A 50 GB plan gives you plenty of space to continue backing up your iPhone. Your first month is free and it’s just $0.99 each month after.

This free-of-charge first month doesn’t apply to people who are currently on an upgraded paid tier and who want to move to the next level. It’s purely for those who are on the 5GB free tier and have run out of space. There are constant calls for Apple to increase the amount of free iCloud storage that it offers to consumers but, for now, this is a decent step in the right direction to try and convince device owners to upgrade.
