Apple Music Hits 40 Million Subscribers Milestone, Gets A New Man In Charge

Apple Music, Apple’s competitor to Spotify among others, has broken the 40 million subscriber barrier according to a new report coming out today. The news also coincides with the report that the service now has a new man in charge, with Oliver Schusser picking up the title of vice president of Apple Music & International Content.

That sounds mighty impressive, and we’re sure that 40 million subscriber number will be music to his ears.

According to Apple, the new man will report directly to Apple’s senior V.P. Eddy Cue, although it is not yet known whether he will also have to match his new boss’s amazing dress sense and fan of unusually loud shirts.

Whatever his clothing habits, Schusser will be responsible for not only Apple Music, but also other digital services such as the App Store, iTunes Store and iBooks throughout Apple’s international markets. He will also have his work cut out for him thanks to his involvement in label, studio and publisher relations for Apple anywhere outside of the United States.

The move beyond 40 million subscribers comes after it reached 30 million back in September of last year, although it does still have quite a way to go if it hopes to match Spotify’s industry leading 70 million paid subscriber count.

The Wall Street Journal already believes that Apple is on track to beat Spotify’s numbers in the United States as soon as this summer, with Apple Music gaining subscribers at a rate of 5% per month, compared to Spotify’s slower rate of 2% per month.

No matter how or when, or indeed if Apple Music gets to the same numbers as Spotify, the service has come a long way since it arrived in an already crowded market in June of 2015.
