Apple has today announced a new hardbound photo book called ‘Designed by Apple in California’, which includes images highlighting not just the products themselves but also how they were designed over the course of the company’s last twenty years of operation.

The photographs used in the book were shot by Andrew Zuckerman – American filmmaker and photographer – with the foreword provided by Apple’s very own head of design, Jony Ive. The chief designer points out that the reason behind the book is not to simply give people pictures of Apple’s products, but to also provide an insight into “how we work, our values, our preoccupations, and our goals.”

As expected, the book is dedicated to the late Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder and former CEO.

“The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.”

The book itself covers product designs through now fewer than 450 photographs, with hardware from the iMac in 1998 to the Apple Pencil in 2015 covered in detail throughout their design stages. Fans of those devices, or indeed anything designed and released in between, will no doubt enjoy the book and its specially milled, custom-dyed construction.

Ive further points out that product designers, and even consumers are so caught up in designs of the future that a lot of the focus ultimately falls on what the company hasn’t done yet, or missed. This photo book is a celebration of the efforts and strides the company has made to this date.

Those looking to pick up a copy of “Designed by Apple in California” will be able to do so when it goes on sale tomorrow, November 16. Buyers have the option of two different sizes; one small (10.20″ x 12.75″) and one large (13″ x 16.25″,) costing $199 and $299 respectively. The book is being self-published by Apple and will only be available from the company itself – no buying it on Amazon, then!
