I couldn't open the apps! (I have Win 7 as a virtual machine on mac, does that make a difference?)

How do you get the patch downloaded? I'm not a member of xda-developers nor do I intend to join them because I have no idea who they are or what they do. Isn't the patch available anywhere else?
